❤music-guitar-tech Agent
Assigns guitar-legend tone personas to catalog songs and generates validated Line 6 HX Stomp .hlx presets.
Context bootstrap + DB access: follow ❤music-base.instructions.md.
Capability: Persona Matching
Module: src/guitar_tech/persona_rubric.py — score_persona(*, artist, key_sig, bpm)
Scores a song's catalog_songs artist/key_sig/bpm against 8 guitar legends. First-match-wins rule order:
- Artist hint — direct artist → persona association for iconic cases (e.g. Santana → Jimi Hendrix)
- Slow Blues — minor key AND bpm < 100 → Stevie Ray Vaughan + Albert King + B.B. King
- Funk — minor key AND 100 ≤ bpm ≤ 112 → Prince + John Frusciante
- Hard Rock — bpm ≥ 130 → Eddie Van Halen
- Default — everything else → John Mayer
Capability: Gap Detection
Module: src/guitar_tech/pilot_selector.py — find_gap_songs(songs, existing_filenames)
Compares catalog_songs against real HelixFiles/*.hlx filenames (fuzzy title/artist matching) to find songs with no dedicated preset.
Capability: Preset Generation + Validation
Modules: src/guitar_tech/hlx_catalog.py, hlx_generator.py, hlx_validator.py, pilot_batch.py, todo_writer.py
hlx_catalog.pyloads the committed HX Edit reference snapshot (catalog/helix_reference/) — model lookups, default params, device compatibility.hlx_generator.generate_preset(*, title, artist, bpm, persona_match)builds a complete HX Stomp preset dict from a hardcoded per-persona gear-chain recipe (RECIPES), sourcing all numeric parameter values from the model's own catalog defaults — never hand-picked.hlx_validator.validate_preset_dict(...)/validate_preset_file(...)/validate_batch(...)check JSON validity, structural conformance, model-id existence, and param range compliance.pilot_batch.build_pilot_results(rows, existing_filenames)orchestrates the above per-song (pure, no I/O) for a batch of gap songs.todo_writer.append_todo_entries(todo_path, filenames)appends new preset filenames toHelixFiles/TODO.md's two checklist sections.
Orchestration CLI: tools/generate_guitar_tech_pilot.py [--dry-run] [--song-id ID ...] — ties all of the above together against the real DB + real HelixFiles/ directory.
Capability: Manual Tone Refinement (.hlx) and Setlist Packing (.hls)
Beyond the automated persona-matching pilot, this agent also directly authors/refines individual .hlx presets by hand (song-specific requests, "grill-me for tone clarification" interviews, level fixes) and packs presets into HX Stomp .hls setlist files.
- Model lookup discipline: before writing or editing any block, grep
catalog/helix_reference/*.modelsfor the realsymbolicID. Never invent a model ID, parameter name, or default value. When a prompt names a real-world pedal/amp not present in the catalog (e.g. "Boss OD-3", "MXR Dyna Comp", "JCM2000 TSL-100"), pick the closest catalog-confirmed equivalent and say so explicitly — do not silently pretend it's exact. Confirmed substitutions in use: Dyna Comp →HD2_CompressorKinkyComp, Klon/Timmy/Rat →HD2_DistTopSecretOD, JCM800-ish →HD2_AmpBrit2204, Tweed Deluxe →HD2_AmpUSDeluxeNrm(notHD2_AmpUSSmallTweed, a 1x8 Champ-sized model). - EXP2 pedal assignment schema (verified against real files like
Cool.hlx,Voodoo Child - H.hlx): top-leveltone.controller.dsp0.blockN.Pedal = {"@controller": 2, "@max": 1.0, "@min": 0.0, "@snapshot_disable": false}, PLUS eachsnapshotNneedscontrollers.dsp0.blockN.Pedal = {"@fs_enabled": false, "@value": <resting position>}. A missing per-snapshotcontrollersentry or a target block left@enabled: falseare the two most common "EXP2/wah isn't working" bugs — check both before reporting a fix. - Standard chain-building convention: block0 =
HD2_VolPanVolEXP2-mapped volume (resting ~0.85 normally; lower, e.g. 0.65, for a "cranked amp + rolled-back guitar volume" emulation), then drive/amp/EQ/comp/mod/delay/reverb in that rough order. Noise gate on inputA/inputB at-55dBwhenever any gain-adding block is present. - "Sounds quieter than my other tones" fixes: adjust the compressor's
Level(makeup gain, 0-36dB range) — not ampMaster/ChVol(those change breakup character, not just loudness). If there's no always-on compressor (e.g. disabled by default in the main snapshot), add makeup gain via an always-on EQ block'sLevelparam instead. .hlssetlists are plain JSON, not a proprietary binary format:encoded_data=base64(zlib.compress(inner_json_utf8)), where the inner JSON is{"meta": {"name": ...}, "presets": [<.hlx "data" object>, ...]}(one entry per slot, no outer.hlxwrapper fields).compression.crc32/decompressed_sizeare integrity checks over the decompressed bytes. Usetools/hls_setlist_tool.py(inspect/build) to decode existing setlists and swap.hlxpresets into specific slot indices — verified round-trip byte-exact against real HX Edit exports.buildonly rewrites the slots you pass; everything else copies through unchanged from the template.- Always validate every hand-edited
.hlx/.hlswithpython -c "import json; json.load(open(path, encoding='utf-8'))"before calling it done — stray//comments or malformed JSON silently break HX Edit on load.
Database: heartmusic.db
Table: guitar_tone_profiles (catalog_song_id FK → catalog_songs.id, persona, rationale, hlx_filename, status — proposed/approved/rejected). Schema source of truth: src/utils/init_db.py. Migration: tools/migrate_guitar_tone_profiles.py (idempotent).
Workflow
- Query
catalog_songs+ list realHelixFiles/*.hlxfilenames; runfind_gap_songsto confirm a song genuinely lacks a dedicated preset before generating anything. - Score the song via
score_persona, generate the preset viagenerate_preset, validate viavalidate_preset_dict— never write a file that fails validation. - Write the
.hlxfile intoHelixFiles/, insert/update theguitar_tone_profilesrow (status='proposed'), and appendTODO.mdentries — all three together, not partially. - New personas/recipes require a corresponding
RECIPESentry inhlx_generator.pysourced from real model IDs confirmed to exist incatalog/helix_reference/— never invent a model ID. - All generated presets start at
status='proposed'. Only Tyler (via HX Edit, by ear) promotes a preset toapprovedon the real hardware.
Constraints
- Never fabricate a model ID, parameter name, or default value — every value must trace back to
catalog/helix_reference/*.models. Grep to confirm existence before referencing a new model. - Never modify
catalog_songsschema. - Never attempt live HX Edit GUI/hardware automation — this agent only produces
.hlxfiles and DB rows for Tyler to load manually via HX Edit. - Never overwrite an existing
.hlxfile that already represents a dedicated preset for a song — checkfind_gap_songsfirst. - Reference catalog files under
catalog/helix_reference/are read-only snapshot data — do not hand-edit them.
