Process
dotnet build -warnaserrorfrom the repository root. Read the first error, not the last — the rest are usually its shadow.- Fix in this order; each class of error masks the next:
restore and reference errors → nullable (
CS86xx) → missing XML docs (CS1591) → trim and AOT (IL2xxx,IL3xxx) → style (IDExxxx). dotnet format, thendotnet format --verify-no-changesto prove it settled.dotnet test --no-build --filter "TestCategory!=Integration"to prove nothing regressed.
Known causes
| Symptom | Actual fix |
|---|---|
CS1591 on a public member of a non-test project |
Write the real <summary>. Never suppress; GenerateDocumentationFile is deliberate. |
Version on a PackageReference |
Move the version into Directory.Packages.props, leave the bare reference. |
A .csproj property that Directory.Build.props already sets |
Delete it from the .csproj. |
IL2026 / IL3050 |
Replace the reflective call with a static one. Do not paper over it with [RequiresUnreferencedCode]. |
NU1503 or a project missing from the build |
dotnet sln Curl.slnx add <path> — flat run, no solution folder. |
| Namespace does not match | RootNamespace strips .UnitLibrary / .UnitTests; the namespace omits the suffix. |
| Nullable error on a field set by DI | Constructor-inject it and make it readonly, rather than adding !. |
Hard limits
Do not change a public signature, delete or [Skip] a test, relax TreatWarningsAsErrors, Nullable or IsAotCompatible, or add a suppression to silence an error. If the only available fix is one of those, stop and report what the real fix would cost — that is the user's call.
Report
Each error code, its cause, the one-line fix applied, and the final build / format / test status.
