JS runtime bridge (realms, dual thread, PAPI, events)
You own crates/bobcat-core (the realms, the threads, the view and group
facades, the host module, timers and resource plumbing),
crates/quickjs-rust-bridge over vendor/quickjs, and the TypeScript realm
runtime in packages/bobcat-element/src. The dual-thread model here is real
threads, not an emulation: a group owns bobcat-main (document + MTS realm)
and bobcat-workers (every Worker realm, including the BTS).

Landed and not to be regressed:
- JavaScript never runs inside a tokio task's
poll. Each engine thread's top loop runs queued jobs one at a time, outside the scheduler; tasks only wait and route, and never touch a realm, a document or the sharedScriptRuntime. A job may park onJsThread::wait— a freshblock_onof the sameLocalSet— so a synchronous host member (adoptStyleSheet, or arequire) blocks JavaScript alone: tasks keep running, no other job does, and jobs queued meanwhile run in FIFO order afterwards. Nothing of a view is served outside a job: opening its realm is the view's first job, so a burst that arrived earlier is queued behind it, and aBeginFrameacknowledgement waits out whatever job of the group is parked. Boot parks for its entry not at all: it imports the entry by its URL, a task of the view completes that module from the pre-issued answer (with the entry preamble prepended and the response URL as itsimport.meta.url), the entry's own request never reaches the fetcher, that task names the entry (__BobcatInitEntrywith the response URL) before completing it, and a worker resolves against the entry URL JavaScript holds. The only two things boot waits on are both inside its first__FlushElementTree: every listed author sheet, success or failure, mounted in listed order before the document is styled (a failed one isStartupFailed(Script)naming it), then the painter binding. Until the sheets have settled the epilogue'scommit_if_dirtyskips rather than waits, so no frame is published without them.consume_messagesonbobcat-workersnever awaits the deliveries it queued, becauseTerminateis in band behind them. - The BTS is a
Workernamedlynx-bgon the group'sbobcat-workersruntime. A BTS failure is a nonfatalEngineEvent::WorkerFailed— neverStartupFailed, never view teardown.ScriptFinishedmeans MTS boot settled and says nothing about the BTS. - Cross-thread messages are QuickJS structured clones. A refused value
(function,
Symbol,Map,Set,RegExp,Error,DataView, accessor) throws synchronously at the send. Do not add a custom codec, a deep clone, or a JSON-shaped degradation on top of it. - Event dispatch:
dom::Document::event_stepsbuilds the path; the host makes one__BobcatDispatchEventcall per event and the realm runs capture, bubble and theglobal-bindEventpass itself. The host keeps no listener index — only 0↔1 listener-name edges cross back, and the painter holds a lock-free replica.target.datasetis re-read per delivery; no staleness guards exist. - String and worklet handlers live in separate kind tables. String
__AddEventhandlers publish snapshots carryingdataset/id/uid, never handles. - A listener or timer callback that throws is nonfatal:
ListenerFailed/TimerFailed, the walk continues, a repeating timer stays armed. bobcat:moduleis Node's algorithm inpackages/bobcat-element, over two host members onbobcat-internal:host:resolveModuleUrl(base, specifier), the normalizer animportuses, andloadModuleSync(url, parameters), whose bridge half compiles the source (in the given wrapper parameter list, named by the response URL) or JSON-parses it before evaluating the compiled script. Do not move the cache, themoduleobject or resolution back into the shim, and do not hand source text to JavaScript.bobcat:future'sFutureis one host-backed operation, read either way and only one:wait(timeout?)parks the job — the realm's token is the biased first arm, the deadline sits behind it, and a timeout cancels nothing — whilethenconverts it to one Promise, delivered by the owner's epilogue, after which awaitis aTypeError. What a future settles to is aHostValue, never a realm value. Nothing in production registers one yet.- A checkpoint drains the promise-job queue until empty, as a browser's microtask checkpoint does: no per-checkpoint job budget, no incomplete checkpoint for a later entry to resume. Readiness is MTS-only.
- Init data and global props are
Option<String>JSON text Rust never parses. No Rust JSON models for JS-only payloads, and no walking Rust structs to build JSON for a JS call. __InvokeUIMethodand__GetComputedStyleByKeyread the last layout pass and never flush: the caller decides when to__FlushElementTree, so a job that mutates and then measures sees the pre-mutation geometry.- Not implemented on purpose: per-component css-id scoping, UI methods other
than
boundingClientRect, import maps, import attributes, JSON ESM modules (requiredoes parse a.jsonresponse), transfer lists.
Reference repos
Shorthand lynx/, lynx-stack/, Paws/; absolute paths live once in AGENTS.md
"Reference repos".
lynx-stack/—packages/web-platform/web-coreis the closest existing implementation of this whole layer and the compatibility target; check for anAGENTS.mdin the package you read.lynx/—core/runtimeand the renderer's DOM/event directories (verify the paths) are ground truth for JS-facing native behavior.Paws/— implementation-pattern reference only, for the DOM/event half (engine/src/events/,engine/src/hit_test/).
How to work
- This is the layer
lynx-reactlynx-compatsits on. Keep the contract precise: what fires, in what order, on which thread. Where a tracking doc stops, readweb-coreand cite it — the dual-thread timing model is easy to get subtly wrong from memory. - Native-Lynx vs web-core conflicts go to the user (AGENTS.md Standards policy), not into a silent decision.
- You cannot spawn subagents.
Before finishing
- Format with
cargo fmt -p <crate>per crate touched, nevercargo fmt --all(it reachesvendor/stylo); then run CI's./.github/scripts/fmt-check.sh. pnpm install --frozen-lockfileandpnpm --filter reactlynx-test-fixtures buildfirst —bobcat-core's build compiles the realm runtime intoOUT_DIR, so a stale install breaks cargo.cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings.cargo test -p bobcat-core—tests/main_thread.rsruns the emitted JS through the real realm, besidestartup,multi_view,web_bundle,style_sheets,src/main/runtime/{tests,worker_tests}.rsandsrc/background/tests.rs.- TypeScript changes:
pnpm test:typeandpnpm --filter bobcat-element test(Rstest). CI also assertspackages/bobcat-element/diststays untracked. - Screenshot goldens:
