Dual-Database Architecture
WatermelonDB (Local — Source of Truth for UI)
- SQLite on device, all user-facing reads/writes happen here FIRST
- Schema defined in
packages/db/src/schema.ts - Migrations in
packages/db/src/migrations.ts - Models in
packages/db/src/models/ - Sync adapter pushes changes to Supabase in background
Supabase PostgreSQL (Cloud — Sync Target)
- Migrations in
supabase/migrations/(sequential numbered SQL files) - RLS policies on all multi-tenant tables
- Server-generated tables (e.g.,
market_rates,daily_snapshot_*) are pull-only
Review Workflow
1. Schema Design Review
- All syncable tables MUST have:
created_at,updated_at,deleted,user_id - Exception: Server-generated read-only pull-only tables MAY omit
updated_atanddeleted - Use proper types:
bigintfor IDs,textfor strings,timestamptzfor timestamps,numericfor money,booleanfor flags - Use
lowercase_snake_casefor all identifiers - Financial amounts stored as integers (cents) or
numeric— never floating point
2. Migration Review
- Supabase: SQL files in
supabase/migrations/NNN_descriptive_name.sql - WatermelonDB: Manual
createTable/addColumnsinpackages/db/src/migrations.ts, bump schema version - WatermelonDB has NO
dropColumn— removed columns stay in local SQLite but are ignored - Verify repository migration files in
supabase/migrations/, required WatermelonDB migration/schema changes, npm run db:migrategeneration, and committed generated artifacts. Do not rundb:push, dashboard mutations, or MCP SQL execution.
3. Sync Integrity
- Verify sync columns present on both WatermelonDB and Supabase sides
- Check that
deletedis a soft-delete flag (not actual row deletion) - Ensure
updated_attriggers exist on Supabase for sync conflict resolution - Verify server timestamps are used for conflict resolution, not client timestamps
4. RLS & Security (CRITICAL)
- RLS enabled on ALL user-data tables
- Policies use
(SELECT auth.uid())pattern (subquery, not direct function call) - RLS policy columns (
user_id) are indexed - No
GRANT ALLto application roles
5. Query Performance
- All WHERE/JOIN columns indexed
- Composite indexes in correct column order (equality first, then range)
- Foreign keys have indexes
- No N+1 query patterns in WatermelonDB relations
- Use
.observe()for reactive queries, not polling - Batch operations for bulk inserts/updates
Anti-Patterns to Flag
| Pattern | Severity | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Missing sync columns | CRITICAL | Add created_at, updated_at, deleted, user_id |
| Floating point for money | CRITICAL | Use integer cents or numeric |
| Missing RLS policy | CRITICAL | Add user_id = auth.uid() policy |
| Direct Supabase read for user data | HIGH | Read from WatermelonDB instead |
SELECT * in API queries |
MEDIUM | Select only needed columns |
| Missing index on foreign key | HIGH | Add index |
| Hard-delete instead of soft-delete | HIGH | Set deleted = true instead |
| Client timestamps for sync | HIGH | Use server-generated timestamps |
WatermelonDB-Specific Checks
- Models extend
Modeland use@field,@text,@date,@readonlydecorators correctly - Relations use
@relationand@childrendecorators - Queries use
.query()with properQ.where,Q.and,Q.orconditions - Lazy relations used for optional associations
.observe()used in hooks for reactive data (not.fetch()in intervals)
Supabase-Specific Checks
- Edge functions validate input with Zod
- Database functions use
SECURITY DEFINERonly when necessary - Triggers for
updated_atauto-update exist - Proper cascade rules on foreign keys (
ON DELETE CASCADEvsSET NULL)
Review Checklist
- Sync columns present (
created_at,updated_at,deleted,user_id) - WatermelonDB migration added with schema version bump
- Supabase migration SQL file created
- RLS policies on new tables
- Indexes on foreign keys and RLS policy columns
- Financial amounts use integer/numeric, not float
- Both migration files committed together
Reviewer Boundary
- Report findings only during ordinary assigned review. Never edit files, execute database mutations, or post GitHub comments/reviews without separate lead/user authorization.
- Verify repository migration files and generated artifacts; never create, execute, or apply schema SQL through Supabase MCP or dashboard tools.
- Return schema, migration, backfill, sync-contract, and RLS decisions to the lead/user for approval. The implementing owner addresses approved findings.
