Data Layer Overview
All static game data lives in pytemon/data/:
| File | Contents |
|---|---|
pokemon_data.py |
POKEMON dict — species stats, types, base moves, evolution info |
move_data.py |
MOVES dict — power, type, PP, category, effects |
type_chart.py |
TYPE_CHART — effectiveness multipliers |
trainer_data.py |
TRAINERS dict — Trainer dataclasses with rosters |
Helper accessors live in data/__init__.py:
from pytemon.data import get_pokemon, get_move, get_trainer
Pokemon Data Structure (POKEMON)
"PIKACHU": {
"number": 25,
"name": "PIKACHU",

"base_stats": {
"hp": 35, "attack": 55, "defense": 30,
"special": 50, "speed": 90
},
"base_moves": ["THUNDER SHOCK", "GROWL"],
"learnset": {
9: "THUNDER WAVE", 26: "SWIFT", 33: "AGILITY"
},
"evolution": {
"method": "item",
"item": "Thunder Stone",
"into": "RAICHU"
},
"catch_rate": 190,
"base_exp": 82,
"description": "It stores static electricity in its cheeks.",
}
Move Data Structure (MOVES)
"THUNDER SHOCK": {
"name": "THUNDER SHOCK",
"type": "Electric",
"category": "Special", # "Physical" | "Special" | "Status"
"power": 40,
"accuracy": 100,
"pp": 30,

}
Effect values: "paralysis", "sleep", "poison", "bad_poison", "burn", "freeze", "flinch", "raise_attack", "lower_defense" — see battle_engine.py for the full list.
Locations (locations.py)
Each location is a Location dataclass:
@dataclass
class Location:
name: str
location_type: str # "town" | "route" | "city" | "dungeon"
connected_to: list[str]
wild_pokemon: list[dict] # [{"species": "RATTATA", "min_level": 2, "max_level": 5}]
description: str
has_pokemon_center: bool = False
has_pokemart: bool = False
gym_leader: str | None = None
LOCATIONS dict is the registry. get_location(name) returns the Location or None.
Navigation rules:
- Only connected locations can be moved to directly
- Towns/cities are hubs; routes connect them
can_move_to(current, destination, game_data)checks badges/story flags too
Trainers (trainer_data.py)
Trainer(
id="youngster_joey",
name="Joey",
trainer_class="Youngster",
location="Route 1",
pokemon=[
TrainerPokemon(species="RATTATA", level=4),
],
prize_money=80,
intro_text=["My Rattata is top percentage!"],
defeat_text=["Aw man!"],
victory_text=["I won!"],
badge_reward="", # empty unless this is a gym leader
badge_id="",
)
Gym leader trainers have trainer_class="Gym Leader" and non-empty badge_reward/badge_id.
Gyms (gym_system.py)
GYMS dict maps city name → gym config:
"Pewter City": {
"badge": "Boulder Badge",
"badge_id": "boulder",
"specialty": "Rock",
"leader_id": "brock",
"trainers": ["pewter_trainer_1"],
"min_badges": 0,
}
can_challenge_gym(gs, location) returns (bool, reason_str). award_badge(gs, badge_name, output) grants the badge.
Evolution (evolution.py)
Evolution conditions supported:
# By level
"evolution": {"method": "level", "level": 16, "into": "IVYSAUR"}
# By item
"evolution": {"method": "item", "item": "Fire Stone", "into": "ARCANINE"}
# By trade
"evolution": {"method": "trade", "into": "ALAKAZAM"}
check_evolution(pokemon) returns (can_evolve: bool, into: str | None, method: str).
perform_evolution(gs, pokemon, output) does the actual evolution.

- Add entry to
MOVESindata/move_data.py - Add to relevant Pokemon's
base_movesorlearnset - If it has a new effect type, handle it in
BattleState.apply_status_effect
New Location
- Add
Locationinstance toLOCATIONSinlocations.py - Add the name to
connected_toon adjacent locations (bidirectional) - Add wild Pokemon if it's a route
New Gym Leader
- Add
Trainerwithtrainer_class="Gym Leader"totrainer_data.py - Add gym entry to
GYMSingym_system.py - Set
badge_rewardandbadge_idon the Trainer
