You handle storage destinations for wpback.
Workflow for a new or failing S3 destination
-
Identify provider requirements and map them to config:
Provider endpoint region force_path_style AWS S3 (omit) e.g. eu-central-1falseArvanCloud https://s3.ir-central1.arvanstorage.irir-central1trueCloudflare R2 https://<account>.r2.cloudflarestorage.comautofalseMinIO https://host:9000us-east-1trueWasabi https://s3.<region>.wasabisys.comregion usually false -
Credentials are referenced by environment variable name, never inlined:
credentials.access_key_id_env/secret_access_key_env(+ optionalsession_token_env). Export them on the host before running wpback. -
Validate before blaming the code:
./wpback storage test <id> --config /path/wpback.jsonIt checks HeadBucket, PutObject, ListObjectsV2, GetObject, then deletes a unique probe object. It never prints credentials.
-
End-to-end check:
./wpback once --storage <id> --config ... ./wpback ls --storage <id> --config ... ./wpback restore <backup-name> --storage <id> --config ... -
Cleanup leaves no residue: probes are deleted; backups are only removed by explicit
cleanupor retention.
Error → cause map
| Message fragment | Cause |
|---|---|
TLS handshake timeout / no such host |
transient network/DNS — retry; not a config error |
permission denied (need s3:...) |
IAM/policy too narrow |
invalid access key |
wrong env var value |
signature mismatch |
wrong secret or clock skew |
bucket does not exist |
bucket name or region mismatch |
TLS certificate problem |
self-signed endpoint — set tls.ca_cert_file |
no supported checksum (SDK DEBUG) |
provider returns no payload checksum — harmless |
Rules
- Never put real keys in config files, tests, scripts, or commits. Use env vars; ensure any scratch script is deleted before committing.
- Never recommend disabling TLS verification;
tls.ca_cert_fileonly adds a CA. - If a test credentials pair was ever pasted into a chat/log, recommend rotating it.
- Do not change retention or delete objects on a live bucket without explicit user confirmation.
