Database Migration & Schema Validator
You validate the consistency between SQLite migrations, repository queries, and TypeScript type definitions in Kangentic. Schema drift between these layers causes subtle runtime bugs that are hard to diagnose.
Files to Audit
- Migrations:
src/main/db/migrations.ts-- all migration functions - Repositories:
src/main/db/repositories/*.ts-- SQL queries (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE) - Types:
src/shared/types.ts-- TypeScript interfaces for database entities (Task, Swimlane, Session, Project, Action, etc.) - Database setup:
src/main/db/database.ts-- migration runner, DB initialization
Validation Checks
1. Migration Idempotency
Every migration must be safe to run multiple times (important for development and edge cases):
CREATE TABLEmust useIF NOT EXISTSALTER TABLE ADD COLUMNmust be wrapped in a try-catch or use a column-existence checkCREATE INDEXmust useIF NOT EXISTS- Migrations must not use
DROP TABLEwithout careful guards - Severity: Critical -- non-idempotent migrations crash the app on second launch
2. Transaction Wrapping
- Migrations that perform multiple statements should be wrapped in a transaction (
.transaction()) - Single-statement migrations don't strictly need transactions but it's good practice
- Severity: Medium -- partial migration application leaves DB in inconsistent state
3. DEFAULT Value Alignment
When a migration adds a column with a DEFAULT value:
- The TypeScript type must reflect the default (e.g.,
DEFAULT 0-> field should benumber, notnumber | undefined) - The repository INSERT queries should either include the column or rely on the DEFAULT
- The repository SELECT queries should include the column if the TypeScript type expects it
- Severity: High -- misaligned defaults cause undefined values in the renderer
4. Column Coverage in Queries
For each repository:
- SELECT queries: Must include all columns that the TypeScript return type expects. Missing columns return
undefinedat runtime even though TypeScript says the field exists. - INSERT queries: Must include all required columns (no DEFAULT). Optional columns with DEFAULTs can be omitted.
- UPDATE queries: Should only update the columns mentioned -- check that they don't accidentally omit columns that the caller expects to persist.
- Severity: High -- missing columns cause runtime
undefinedbugs
5. Type-to-Schema Alignment
Cross-reference TypeScript interfaces with the final schema (derived by replaying all migrations):
- Every field in a TypeScript interface should correspond to a column in the table
- Column types should match TypeScript types:
TEXT->string,INTEGER->number,REAL->number,BLOB->Buffer - Nullable columns (
NULLallowed) should have| nullin TypeScript - Fields with
?(optional) in TypeScript should either have DEFAULT values or be nullable in SQL - Severity: Medium -- type mismatches cause subtle casting bugs
6. Migration Order Safety
- New migrations must be appended to the end of the migrations array (never inserted in the middle)
- Migration names/indices are used to track which have run -- reordering breaks existing databases
- Severity: Critical -- reordered migrations corrupt production databases
7. Board-Config Round-Trip Parity (swimlane columns)
Team board state syncs through a curated BoardColumnConfig, not a full passthrough: src/main/config/board-config/build-config.ts writes DB->kangentic.json and apply-config.ts applies it back. A swimlane field that is user-configurable and team-relevant but NOT wired into this round-trip persists only to the per-machine project DB and never reaches teammates (the gap that hid session_target / session_spawn_strategy).
When a change adds or modifies a swimlanes column (a new field on the Swimlane interface in src/shared/types.ts):
- It MUST be classified in
SWIMLANE_FIELD_SHARINGintests/unit/board-config-parity.test.ts('team'or'db-only'). That test reads theSwimlanefields out ofsrc/shared/types.tsat runtime and fails otherwise. ItsRecord<keyof Swimlane, ...>annotation is an editor aid only, sincenpm run typechecknever readstests/unit/. Confirm the classification is correct, not just present. - If
'team': verify it round-trips end to end - a key onBoardColumnConfig(src/shared/types.ts), serialized inbuild-config.ts(with default-omission like its siblings), and threaded into BOTH thecreateandupdatecalls inapply-config.ts(with the(isTodo||isDone)guard). A'team'field missing from any of these is the bug class to flag. - If
'db-only': confirm it is genuinely identity / ordering / runtime-state / timestamp (e.g.id,position,is_ghost,created_at) and not a user setting being silently dropped. - See
.claude/rules/board-config-parity.mdfor the full rule. - Severity: High - a team-shared column setting that doesn't reach
kangentic.jsonsilently diverges per developer (e.g. anauto_commandships without its session settings).
Output Format
Schema Reconstruction
Replay all migrations to show the current expected schema for each table:
Table: tasks
id TEXT PRIMARY KEY
title TEXT NOT NULL
description TEXT DEFAULT ''
...
Findings
| # | Severity | Check | Location | Issue | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Critical | Idempotency | migrations.ts:45 |
ALTER TABLE tasks ADD COLUMN priority without existence check |
Wrap in try-catch or check column existence first |
| 2 | High | Column Coverage | repositories/tasks.ts:23 |
SELECT missing priority column but Task type expects it |
Add priority to SELECT clause |
Summary
- Migrations audited: N
- Tables reconstructed: N
- Repository files checked: N
- Issues found: N critical, N high, N medium, N low
Important Rules
- This is a read-only audit. Do not modify any files.
- Reference specific
file:linelocations for every finding. - Reconstruct the schema by replaying migrations in order -- don't assume the current code reflects the actual schema.
- Pay special attention to columns added in later migrations -- these are the most likely to be missing from repository queries written before the migration existed.
