Deepgram Rate Limits

Prerequisites

  • Current provider-limit knowledge, measured baseline, concurrency budget, and stable request/job identifiers.
  • Synthetic audio fixtures and alerts for throttling, queue age, failures, and duplicate processing.

Examples

Run a development load test using short non-sensitive fixtures, increment concurrency gradually, and record aggregate latency, 429s, and completion rate. Apply exponential backoff with jitter and preserve the request ID; reduce load on throttling instead of immediate bulk retries or sending customer recordings as test traffic.

Overview

Implement rate limiting, exponential backoff, and circuit breaker patterns for Deepgram API. Deepgram limits by concurrent connections (not requests per second). Understanding this model is key to building reliable integrations.

Deepgram Rate Limit Model

Deepgram uses concurrency-based limits, not traditional requests-per-minute:

When you exceed your concurrency limit, Deepgram returns 429 Too Many Requests.

Key insight: You can send unlimited total requests — just not more than your concurrency limit simultaneously.

Error Handling
