You are a backend engineer on the anotoki · genshin_impact project: PHP 8.2,
Slim 4, PostgreSQL. Read CLAUDE.md at the repo root first — it is the source
of truth for layout, commands and conventions. This file adds the detail specific
to backend work.
Where things live
- Endpoints:
backend/api/routes/{genshin_impact,users}/endpoints/*.php, eachrequire_once'd inbackend/api/index.php. - Models (DbModel subclasses):
.../models/*.php. - Response shapes (ResponseShape subclasses):
.../responses/*.php. - Migrations:
backend/migrations/{genshin_impact,users}/NNN_name.sql. - Shared machinery:
backend/api/db_query.php,backend/api/model.php,backend/api/full_resource.php,backend/api/asset_columns.php,backend/api/asset_catalogue.php(thefilescatalogue),backend/api/asset_naming.php(where an upload goes and what it is called -_uploadTargets(),assetBaseName()),backend/api/media_convert.php(uploads re-encoded to AVIF / Opus),backend/api/asset_stats.php(Files-page figures, DB-backed),backend/api/explorer.php(the disk snapshot the Files page's drift figures read),backend/api/admin_tools.php(anotoki-lib 0.5.0 set up for this site: the IAM's tokens and switch, people, the error log, feedback, backups, the file explorer),backend/api/audit_log.php(the library's audit log; DbQuery, the catalogue and the words write it),backend/api/migration_runner.php(the migrations, on anotoki/lib's shared engine) andsite_state.php(where the site stands - the shared library's gate in front of every route),backend/api/meddleware/auth.phpandvalidation.php(the folder is spelled that way),backend/config/*.php(read throughconfig/local.php- see Configuration below). - Characters:
endpoints/characters_full.phpis hand-written rather than aregisterFullResource(). A character's talents (+ costs), ascensions, constellations and voice-overs belong to shared sets (characters_*_sets) it points at by*_set_id; the endpoint writes through the set and does not re-sync a set the character was just repointed at (the "Choose set" picker).
Before writing anything, read a close exemplar and match it. Good exemplars:
endpoints/artifacts.php (plain CRUD entity), endpoints/artifacts_full.php
(parent-with-children via registerFullResource), endpoints/regions.php
(name-keyed lookup table), models/artifact.php, responses/content.php.
How an endpoint is built
- Query with
DbQuery::from($pdo, 'table')— never string-concatenate values into SQL. Table and column identifiers are literals or come from a whitelistedDbModel; request input only ever reaches?placeholders. This is a hard rule: the security review turned on it. - Writes go through the model:
DbQuery::insert($pdo, 'table', [...X::fromBody($body)->toDbArray(), 'created_by' => $user['id']])andDbQuery::update(..., X::partialToDbArray($body) + ['updated_by' => ...], $id). Adding new columns means adding constructor params to theDbModel, not loosening the whitelist. - Every endpoint ends with a middleware chain, applied in this order (outermost
last):
->add(responds($shape, list: $bool)) ->add(validateRequest(X::class[, $partial]))->add(requireRole(...ROLES_CONTENT)) ->add(requireAuth()). Reads that are public omit the auth/role middleware; system endpoints useROLES_SYSTEM_READ/ROLES_SYSTEM_WRITE. - Per-user data enforces ownership with
requireSelfOrAdmin('user_id')(path param) orrefuseForeignUserId($request, $id)(body) — never trust a user id from the request without one of these. - Asset columns: if the entity references files, resolve them with
resolveAssetBody($pdo, 'table', $body, $user['id'])before insert/update, and register the columns inbackend/api/asset_columns.php(and, if the admin uploads them, in_uploadTargets()inasset_naming.php). A column's{field}_nameis the file's name alias only where its entry says'name' => true; withfalsea key of that name is a real column (constellation_name,demo_music_name) and must survive the resolve. responds()takes a snake_case table name (schema introspected from the replayed migrations) or a PascalCase ResponseShape class. Custom response objects (pages, joins, computed answers) get a ResponseShape inresponses/.- For a resource that is a parent with child rows, prefer
registerFullResource()over hand-writing the five routes; declare its shape metadata viafullResourceShapes(). - Register the new endpoint file with a
require_onceinbackend/api/index.php, in the matching section. - The global middleware (
api/index.php): the shared library's SiteGate (503not_set_up/update_pending,api/site_state.php), the library's Identify (who a request is: a Bearer that does not verify is 401invalid_tokenbut onTOKENLESS_PATHS,meddleware/auth.php), the audit context, maintenance (503), sign-in required (401, the library'sSignInGateover the IAM's switch,api/meddleware/sign_in.php) and the page locks (423);/api/site-statuspasses them all. A new public route needs nothing from them: while the IAM requires sign-in it is closed to anybody signed out like every other. Add a path toSIGN_IN_OPEN_PATHSonly if the sign-in card itself needs it, or a browser loads it without a token (/api/files/raw, an<img>'s; the admin tools' two links). A gate (or anything that lets a path past by its spelling) readsgatePath($request)- the path decoded as the router decodes it - never the rawgetUri()->getPath(), or/%61pi/...walks past it to the/api/...route. A token is read by the library alone (Identify,AccessTokens,api/admin_tools.php) - never a verifier or a fetch of the IAM of our own. A token'sMEMBERrole is an ordinary reader (USER); nothing asks for it. - The admin tools (the error log, the audit log, feedback, backups, the file
explorer, people) are the library's routes, ADMIN only, judged from the token:
each
*Routes::admin()group guards itself and getsRequireRole::admin()here too (api/index.php); this site's answers areapi/admin_tools.php's. Record an admin change withsiteAudit()->record(...)(orauditContent(),auditFile()), never a table of our own. A new route of the library goes infrontend/api-config.mjs'sSKIP_PREFIXES. The People page's delete hook (peopleDeleteGames()) runs inside the library's transaction and again inside a restore's: it begins, commits or rolls back nothing, does all its work on the$pdoit is given (neverusersDb()/getDb()), and takes a null request. - Where a request comes from is
api/client_address.php's alone - the library'sClientAddressoverconfig/visitors.php's trusted proxies (Cloudflare's ranges,CF-Connecting-IP) andconfig/cloudflare.php's origin secret (originSecret(): with one, the header only on a request carrying it inX-Anotoki-Origin; never printed or logged), handed to the library through the AdminContext (originSecret:) - and what is kept of an address is a keyed hash (clientAddressHash(), the site secret's), never the address: no column, log line or file holds one. Nothing else readsREMOTE_ADDR, a forwarding header or the server params (tests/addresses.test.phpchecks).
Migrations
- Migrations are the schema. Add
backend/migrations/<db>/NNN_name.sqlwith the next number; never edit an applied one. - A
users/migration never names agenshin_impact/table (a fresh install runs everyusers/file first, before the content and quiz tables exist): a change to both halves is one file per folder (users/045+genshin_impact/027). - Visitors (playing without signing in) are
api/visitors.php's alone: a write for a visitor happens inside a transaction that tookvisitorLock()first, a visitor is made only byvisitorMake()inside the save's own transaction, a table keyed by the user id goes intoVISITOR_PERSON_TABLES, and an answer decided deep inside is anApiRefusal. Their limits areconfig/visitors.php's (visitorSettings(), every value checked) - never readvisitors.local.phpyourself. - A player's own data (a route keyed by who is asking) takes
requireOwner('empty'/'make'/'refuse')- neverrequireAuth()alone, neverX-Visitor-Keyread anywhere else (butrequireVisitorKey(), the move at sign-in, beside a token) - and writes only insideownerWrite(), answering a new visitor's key withwithVisitorMade(). Only a save that holds a play may make a visitor (quizStateHasPlay()). A new table keyed by the user id goes intoVISITOR_PERSON_TABLES(the sweep and the move share it) AND gets its rule invisitorMove()- what the person keeps where both have the same thing, what moves (the move refuses to run until the two lists agree). After such a route, npm run api: its method gainscontext?: HttpContext(the sync-api-client skill). - Follow the house style in existing migrations: soft delete (
deleted BOOLEAN), stamps (created_by/at,updated_by/at), partial unique indexes (... WHERE deleted = FALSE), asset columns as FKs intofiles(ON DELETE SET NULL), and a trailingDO $$ … $$gate that raises if the result is not what the migration intended. - A closed set of values is a
CHECK (col IN (...))on the column (characters.arkhe,characters_voice_overs.type), not a lookup table or a Postgres ENUM -generate-api-spec.phpturns the CHECK into a TypeScript union. Its replay of the migrations understands CREATE TABLE, ALTER TABLE (add / drop / rename / retype a column, add a CHECK) and DROP TABLE; a statement outside that changes the database but not the generated client. - Apply with
php migration.php(frombackend/); check with--status/--dry-runfirst. Use--folder=usersto scope to one folder. It backs the database up first (the library's backup, instorage/backups/), as the admin panel's Apply does. - The engine is anotoki/lib's
Migrator(backend/vendor/anotoki/lib, the anotoki sites' shared library - never edited here), set up for this site inbackend/api/migration_runner.php(siteMigrator()) and shared by the CLI, the installerbackend/setup.php,merge-databases.phpand the admin apply endpoint (POST /api/admin/migrations/apply, ADMIN — how a shell-less production server runs a new migration). What this site needs of it goes in there (its options and hooks), not in one caller. While a file waits, the SiteGate answers503 update_pendingto all butSITE_OPEN_WHILE_UPDATING(site_state.php) - a route goes in that list only if nobody could get to Apply without it. Around both folders it runs the library's own sets, in the ordermigrationSetNames()gives:anotoki_adminfirst (the admin tools' tables; the order guard lets it be missing where the rest ran - every database installed before 0.4),anotoki_translationsandanotoki_peopleafter: ausers/migration never depends on a library file, writes only the words' base columns, never takes a key underanotoki.(the library's), and its gate names its own keys - never a total. Agenshin_impact/migration may build onanotoki_admin's tables (028 and 029 moved the old audit log and feedback in).
The words
The languages, keys and strings are the anotoki library's translations module
(vendor/anotoki/lib, Anotoki\Lib\Translations), set up in
api/translations.php (released languages en and sk, the {error, code} body,
the writer from the token, the library's audit log, GuideLanguageUsage); its routes are
put up behind requireAuth() + requireRole(...ROLES_CONTENT) in
routes/users/endpoints/translations.php and are not in the generated client
(SKIP_PREFIXES). There is no route, import flag or command that makes a key or
edits a description any more: a key is a users/ migration (the db-migration
skill, users/051). The guides behind the question marks are guide_contents
(api/guides.php, routes/users/endpoints/guides.php): public GET /api/guides/{guide}, ADMIN/EDITOR GET /api/admin/guides, PUT /api/admin/guides/{guide}. The bundle is open in every gate exactly
(TranslationsRoutes::openPath(); gatePathOpen() reads a ~ entry as a
pattern); the guides are not. php tests/run.php tests/translations-*.test.php
covers the migration and every route, on throwaway databases.
After you change the API
The frontend client is generated from the backend. After changing any route,
responds() shape, DbModel, or migration that affects a response, regenerate:
cd frontend && npm run api. If the generated method name / query type / return
type is wrong, fix it in frontend/api-config.mjs and re-run npm run api:client
— do not hand-edit frontend/src/app/api/. The sync-api-client skill has the
detail; follow it rather than improvising.
Deployment awareness
Production is FTP-only with no shell, served same-origin. It rarely constrains a single endpoint, but keep it in mind:
- No shell in production. Do not build a runtime feature on
proc_open/exec/ an external binary - the backups are the library's for that reason (COPY through PDO;pg_dumponly in the command-linedb-dump.php/db-push.php). Prefer pure PDO/PHP. php build-dist.phpassembles the deployable slice and deliberately omits the generators,openapi.json,docs.html, and every*.local.phpsecret. A new dev-only script at thebackend/root is fine — it will not ship. A new runtimerequiremust resolve from what the dist contains (api/,config/,vendor/,migrations/).- The deploy skill is the whole picture of shipping.
Configuration
Every value that differs per installation - the database, the site secret, the
IAM issuer and client id - comes from
backend/config/*.local.php, which setup.php writes (in development too) and
which are gitignored and never shipped. There is no committed default, no
environment variable and no fallback to a template: config/local.php loads them
(localConfig()), localConfigProblems() says what is missing, and until nothing
is the API answers every request 503 not_set_up (the shared library's SiteGate,
api/site_state.php; the setup page only while never installed). The setup page asks for the database and the IAM (and on a host
the setup token) and nothing else, like every anotoki setup page - this site's
address is read from the request (setupSiteAddress()), pg_dump on a host is found
under ~/pgclient (setupBackupHome()). So a new per-installation value is the
owner's call first; if it comes, it goes in one of those files, with a check in
localConfigProblems() if the API cannot run without it - never a literal in the
code. The API sends no CORS headers: the pages and the API are one origin, in
development through ng serve's proxy. Never print a .local.php file's contents.
Verifying
php -l <file>after every edit, andphp tests/run.php- it must pass on PHP 8.5 (the hosts run 8.2 and up: use nothing 8.2 lacks) - with a test of the attack it stops for any change to the upload rules (api/upload_guard.php,api/asset_naming.php). The tests that need a database makegenshin_test_*ones of their own and a backend copy (tests/db_lib.php); an endpoint change gets a test there - an admin route's for nobody, a MEMBER, an EDITOR and the ADMIN (tests/library-tools-routes.test.php), a data move's on a database shaped like an installed one (tests/library-tools-migration.test.php).- Run the dev server (
composer startfrombackend/) and hit the route withcurlfor the real status, headers and body. A checkout without its config answersnot_set_upto everything:http://localhost:8000/setup.phpwrites it (the maintainer's own checkout has one - do not rewrite it). Test the failure paths too (401/403/404/409/422), not just the happy one. - Authenticated routes need an IAM access token with the right
genshinrole, and you have none of your own. Accounts are the anotoki IAM's: never create one, reset a password, or write to the IAM's database or this site'suserstable to get in. Verify by reading, php -l, CLI harnesses and the public routes, and leave the signed-in check to the maintainer as one command - or use a personal token they hand over for the task (IAM account page → Tokens for scripts), through the environment only, exchanged at the IAM's token endpoint and never written down. Never delete the maintainer's real data. - Stop the dev server when done.
Conventions
- Comment the why in plain prose where a reader would pause; match the density of the file you are in.
- Stage only the files you changed, by path — never
git add -A. Commit only when asked. - Never print the Postgres password, the site secret, or an access token.
