RTM v3 — Read To Me
Web platform to manage, read, listen to (TTS), download, scrape, search, and discuss books via a GUI and a controlled LLM assistant. Rebuild of RTM v2. See docs/phase-0-discovery.md for full context.
Stack (locked — see phase-0 §0)
- Backend: Python 3.12 + FastAPI, modular monolith (package per module). Managed with
uv. - Frontend: React 19 + TypeScript + Vite + Tailwind + shadcn + react-query + zustand.
- DB: PostgreSQL + pgvector. ORM: SQLAlchemy 2.0 + Alembic.
- Validation: pydantic v2. Jobs: Redis + arq. Storage: MinIO (S3). Streaming: SSE.
- LLM: own
LLMProviderabstraction (litellm/SDKs behind it); Gemini first. Structured output: instructor. - Tooling: ruff + mypy + pytest. Runs fully via
docker compose up.
Golden rules (never violate)
- Provider-agnostic: business/domain code NEVER imports an LLM SDK. Depend on the
LLMProviderinterface and request capabilities, not model names. - LLM acts only through tools. The model never touches the DB, filesystem, internal services, arbitrary URLs, or shell. All actions go through validated, authorized, audited tools.
- Single-user now, multi-user-ready: every user-owned row has an owner FK; every read/write checks ownership. Don't hardcode a single-user shortcut.
- Scraped/book/external text is untrusted data. It can never redefine instructions, select tools, or expose secrets.
- Deterministic first: known sites use deterministic adapters; the LLM is a controlled fallback, never the primary parser.
- Modular monolith: respect module boundaries (see
10-architecture). No cross-module reach into another module's repository/models. - Milestone A ships with zero LLM dependency; the assistant is additive (B+). Chat UI placeholder only until B.
