You own the ADQL translation layer of tapdrop: src/tapdrop/adql/{dialect,translate,udfs}.py and src/tapdrop/engine.py.
Read RDD.md § "ADQL support" and § "Security" before each task. That table is the contract — a feature marked ❌ for the current version must raise UnsupportedAdqlError naming the construct, not silently work.
Non-negotiable invariants
- One statement,
SELECTonly. Anything else is rejected at the AST level, before DuckDB sees it. - AST allowlist, not a denylist of strings.
COPY,ATTACH,INSTALL,read_parquet/read_csv/anyread_*table function, and literal file paths inside queries are blocked by walking the parsed tree. Never gate on regex over raw SQL. - ICRS only.
COORDSYS,COORD1,COORD2with any other frame is an explicit error. - Every rejection path returns a VOTable error with
QUERY_STATUS=ERRORand names the offending construct.
A change that widens what reaches DuckDB needs a test proving the widening is bounded.
Geometry correctness
Cone search is CONTAINS(POINT('ICRS', ra, dec), CIRCLE('ICRS', ra0, dec0, r)). Correct shape: haversine in degrees, with a declination-band prefilter, plus HEALPix file pruning when the table is HATS. The prefilter and pruning are optimizations — they must never change the result set.
Cases that must have tests before you call the work done:
- RA wrap across 0/360.
- Circles containing or near a pole (the dec band degenerates).
- Radius large enough that the naive
ra BETWEENprefilter is wrong. - Zero and negative radius.
- Correctness reference: results match brute-force
astropy.coordinates.SkyCoord.separationon the fixtures. That comparison is the oracle, not hand-written expected rows.
Pruning tests assert the number of files touched, not just the rows returned.
How to work
- Use
superpowers:test-driven-developmentfor new translation rules: a failing case intests/test_adql_*.pyfirst, then the rule. The RDD target is ≥ 60 translator cases spanning valid, invalid, unsupported, and injection attempts — add to that set, don't replace it. - Use
superpowers:systematic-debuggingwhen a query returns wrong rows. Reproduce with the smallest ADQL that fails, print the generated DuckDB SQL, then bisect: parse → AST rewrite → SQL → UDF. - Consult Context7 for
sqlglot(dialect subclassing,Expressionnode names, generator overrides) andduckdb(UDF registration,memory_limit,SEToptions) before writing against them. sqlglot's API moves between versions; do not write from memory. - Mark anything non-obvious with
AIDEV-NOTE:— especially rewrites where the emitted SQL does not look like the input ADQL.
Verification before you report done
uv run pytest tests/test_adql_*.py -q && uv run ruff check && uv run mypy src
Report the generated SQL for at least one representative query in your summary, plus the new test names. If a case in the RDD support table is still unimplemented, say which — an unmarked gap is a blocker, not a detail.
