Storage Architecture
This project has two storage backends that must always be kept in sync:
JSON File Storage (internal/impl/repositories/json/)
- Files:
agent_repository.go,chat_repository.go,model_repository.go,provider_repository.go,task_repository.go,tool_repository.go - Storage path:
.aiagent/storage/*.json(default) or~/.aiagent/storage/(--globalflag) - Data format: JSON with
json:"fieldName"struct tags on entities - No migration system — changes are additive (new fields with zero values in old files)
MongoDB Storage (internal/impl/repositories/mongo/)
- Files:
agent_repository.go,chat_repository.go,model_repository.go,provider_repository.go,task_repository.go,tool_repository.go - Driver:
go.mongodb.org/mongo-driver - Struct tags:
bson:"fieldName"on entities - Collections mirror entity names (e.g.,
agents,chats,models) - Connection:
internal/impl/database/mongodb.go
Interfaces (source of truth)
All repository contracts are defined in internal/domain/interfaces/ — both backends must satisfy them exactly.
Entity Schema (current)
Agent (internal/domain/entities/agent.go):
ID string— UUID,_idin MongoDBName stringSystemPrompt stringTools []string— tool namesCreatedAt time.TimeUpdatedAt time.Time
Model (internal/domain/entities/model.go): provider, model name, temperature, context window, etc.
Chat (internal/domain/entities/chat.go): links Agent + Model, holds message history.
Skill (internal/domain/entities/skill.go): name, content from SKILL.md files.
Tool (internal/domain/entities/tool.go): name, description, parameters.
Provider (internal/domain/entities/provider.go): provider name, API endpoint, default models.
Schema Change Process
When adding/modifying entity fields:
-
Update the entity struct in
internal/domain/entities/xxx.go- Add both
json:"fieldName"andbson:"fieldName"tags - For optional fields: use pointer types or add
omitempty - For new required fields: provide sensible defaults in
NewXxxconstructor
- Add both
-
JSON backward compatibility:
- JSON files from before the change won't have the new field — Go's JSON decoder zero-initializes missing fields
- If zero value is not a safe default, handle it explicitly in the repository
-
MongoDB backward compatibility:
- Add field with
omitemptyif it can be absent in old documents - For indexed fields: plan an index creation step
- Add field with
-
Update repository interfaces if new query methods are needed:
internal/domain/interfaces/xxx_repository.go- Then implement in BOTH json and mongo repos
-
Update seed data in
internal/impl/defaults/defaults.goif the entity is seeded
MongoDB Query Patterns
Safe filter construction (parameterized):
filter := bson.M{"_id": id} // id is a typed value, not string-formatted
result := collection.FindOne(ctx, filter)
Index creation (in mongodb.go or repository init):
indexModel := mongo.IndexModel{
Keys: bson.D{{Key: "name", Value: 1}},
Options: options.Index().SetUnique(true),
}
Efficient queries:
- Project only needed fields when reading large documents
- Use indexes for fields used in filters (name, provider, etc.)
- Limit result sets in list queries
JSON File Patterns
Read pattern:
// Read all from file, filter in memory (small datasets)
var agents []*entities.Agent
// unmarshal from file
Write pattern:
// Read all, update/add, write all back
// Use atomic write (write to temp, rename)
DBA Checklist
- Both JSON and MongoDB repositories implement the interface identically
- All new entity fields have both
json:"..."andbson:"..."tags - New constructor (
NewXxx) initializes all required fields - Backward-compatible: old JSON files with missing fields won't crash
- MongoDB filters use typed values, not string formatting
- Large collection queries have appropriate indexes
- No N+1 query patterns in list operations
-
go test ./...passes after schema changes
