Stack
- Frontend: React 19, React Router 7, Vite, Bootstrap 5, TypeScript (ESM)
- Backend: Express 4, TypeScript (ESM), Prisma 5 (PostgreSQL), MongoDB (raw driver), Keycloak OIDC/PKCE
- Shared types:
shared/types.tsandshared/scene-types.ts— the API contract between front and back; extend these rather than duplicating type definitions - Containerization: Docker Compose — ports 3001 (frontend), 3002 (backend), 8081 (Keycloak), 5432 (PostgreSQL), 27017 (MongoDB)
Architecture
Backend: routes/*.routes.ts → controllers/*.controller.ts → services/*.service.ts
- All imports use
.jsextension (ESM strict mode required, even when importing.tssource files) - Filename convention:
kebab-casewith suffixes.routes.ts,.controller.ts,.service.ts,.middleware.ts createApp()factory insrc/app.tsreturns a configured, testable Express instance- All routes carry Swagger JSDoc annotations
Frontend: routes/ (pages) → components/ (shared UI) → services/ (API calls) → adapters/ (3rd-party integrations)
- Auth shell in
App.tsx(PKCE redirect handling); API client and OAuth logic inbackend.ts - Domain-scoped code goes under
features/; integration adapters underadapters/
Data model:
- PostgreSQL (Prisma): Users, Sessions, Projects, ProjectRoles (
manager/editor/viewer), Vocabularies - MongoDB (raw driver, no ODM): HDT documents (one per project) containing PhysicalObjectMetadata, DigitalAssets, HDTScene, Annotations; AuditEvents in a separate collection
projectId(PostgreSQLProject.id) is the bridge key between both stores and the filesystem path segment for uploaded files

Authoritative domain documentation is in doc/. Ignore doc/outdated_docs/ — it is superseded.
Policies
- No DB migrations: this is an early-stage project. For schema changes, delete Docker volumes and reseed. Never write
prisma migratescripts. If backend TypeScript build fails with missing Prisma exports, runcd backend && npm run prisma:generatebefore rebuilding. - Minimize code: always prefer the smallest correct implementation. Warn before writing large amounts of new code and suggest leaner alternatives. Actively flag dead code, unused imports, and leftover files for removal.
- No duplication: before adding a utility, service, or component, check whether an equivalent already exists.
- Testing: Vitest + Supertest; integration tests live in
backend/src/test/. - MongoDB topology: MongoDB is expected to run as a single-node replica set named
rs0in both Docker Compose and bare-metal local setups. - MongoDB connection strings: use
MONGO_URL=mongodb://mongodb:27017/?replicaSet=rs0for Docker Compose andMONGO_URL=mongodb://localhost:27017/?replicaSet=rs0for bare-metal local development. - MongoDB bootstrap: if MongoDB is recreated or volumes are reset, re-run the bootstrap flow so replica set initialization and collection/index setup are applied (
scripts/bootstrap-mongo.shor the higher-level startup scripts). - Dev Compose seeding: the full local demo bootstrap depends on
docker-compose.override.yml; backend seeding runs only whenNODE_ENV=development. - Seed ownership and scope:
backend/seed.tsis the authoritative idempotent demo seed for PostgreSQL, MongoDB, andproject_files; Keycloak demo users are imported separately fromkeycloak/realm-export/demo-realm.json. - Keycloak dev issuer: in Docker Compose development, the public issuer must stay
http://localhost:8081/realms/demowhile the backend reaches Keycloak over the internal service network; keep hostname/backchannel settings aligned to avoid token issuer mismatches during PKCE login.
