Terraform provider repository structure
The Aiven Terraform Provider has been added as a git submodule in the Aiven docs repository at /external. This submodule contains the following key directories:
examples/resources directory
Contains files with example usage for individual resources. These are the most useful files to embed in the Aiven docs to show how to use specific features with Terraform. Examples are organized by the resource names, for example:
examples/resources/aiven_kafka/resource.tf- Example for Aiven for Apache Kafka® service resource, used to create and configure Kafka servicesexamples/resources/aiven_vpc/resource.tf- Example for VPC resource, used to create and manage virtual private cloudsexamples/resources/aiven_organizational_unit/resource.tf- Example for the organizational unit resource, used to create and manage organizational units within organizations
examples/data-sources directory
Contains files with example usage for individual data sources. These are ONLY useful to embed in the Aiven docs to show how to reference or view information about existing entities with Terraform. Examples are organized by the data source names, for example:
examples/data-sources/aiven_project/data-source.tf- Example for Aiven project data source, often used to reference existing projects to create resources inexamples/data-sources/aiven_billing_group/data-source.tf- Example for Aiven billing group data source, used to reference existing billing groups
examples/ directory
Contains complete, working examples organized by service or feature:
examples/clickhouse/- ClickHouse service examplesexamples/kafka/- Kafka service and integration examplesexamples/postgresql/- PostgreSQL service examplesexamples/mysql/- MySQL service examplesexamples/grafana/- Grafana service examples- And many more service-specific directories
Each example typically includes:
provider.tf- Provider configurationservice.tf- Service resource definitionsvariables.tf- Variable declarationsterraform.tfvars.example- Example variable valuesREADME.md- Instructions and explanations
Task
Your job is to review the Console instructions for a feature in the Aiven documentation and add a Terraform tab with steps to produce the same result using the Aiven Provider for Terraform.
Important You do not add instructions for deleting or removing resources UNLESS there are special instructions in the examples for doing this.
To add Terraform instructions for a feature, you have to decide to either:
- embed an existing file with a Terraform example from the Aiven Terraform Provider submodule in this repository, or
- link to the relevant Terraform documentation if no example file exists.
Follow these steps every time:
- Determine whether you need to refer to a Terraform resource or data source. Resources are used to create or manage Aiven entities, while data sources are used to read or reference existing entities. a. Note: Some features are enabled or used by setting values for a resource's attributes. If this is the case, follow the instructions for documenting attributes.
- Look for a suitable example in the
examples/resources/directory orexamples/data-sources/directory for a Terraform (.tf) file matching the feature being documented. - If no suitable file exists, check the
examples/directory for a complete example that matches the feature being documented. ONLY use more complex example files if it does not require many other additional resources or data sources to work, or if the feature documented is something already complex like an integration. - If there is no suitable
resource.tfordata-source.tffile in theexamples/resourcesorexamples/data-sourcesdirectories respectively AND the other examples are too complex, determine the link to the relevant resource or data source in the Aiven Provider for Terraform documentation. - If you are unsure, default to linking to the documentation.
- Provide your reasoning for the changes in the chat.
Important Some resource.tf or data-source.tf files intentionally have multiple examples and, therefore, are longer. These are usually not suitable for embedding. If the files include more than two examples of usage and/or lengthy code comments, default to linking to the documentation instead. You should link to the exact resource or data source.
Documenting resource attributes
Configuration options (for example, service maintenance windows and technical contacts for projects) are set using attributes for the relevant resources. Not all attributes are included in the example usage in the Terraform submodule files. In cases where the attribute doesn't exist, it’s better to not use the example usage and instead explain in Aiven docs which attribute to use and link to the documentation.
The steps for documenting attributes are as follows:
- Determine which attribute needs to be documented to enable or configure the feature.
- Determine whether the user needs to change the attribute in a Terraform resource or data source. Resources are used to create or manage Aiven entities, while data sources are used to read or reference existing entities. Users may also need to only read a data source attribute to get information about an existing entity.
- Check the appropriate
.tfexample file in theexamples/resources/directory orexamples/data-sources/directory for the target attribute. - If the attribute exists in the example file, embed the file as normal using the
TerraformSamplecomponent. - If the attribute does not exist in the example file, create a Terraform tab that links to the relevant resource or data source in the Terraform documentation and explain which attribute to use.
- Provide your reasoning for the changes in the chat.
Documenting deletions and removals
Do NOT add Terraform tabs for these types of operations:
"Delete a service" "Remove a user" "Revoke a token" "Disable a feature" "Stop a process"
Search strategy
- For straightforward service creation: Look in
examples/{service-name}/for basic service setup files - For straightforward feature creation and configuration: Look in
examples/{feature-name}/. For example,examples/static-ip/for static IPs. - For complex integrations or features: Look in
examples/{service-name}/orexamples/{feature-type}/for advanced use cases or check if there are specialized example directories. - For platform features: Look in
examples/organization/,examples/vpc/, or similar platform-specific directories. - If no example exists: Reference the appropriate documentation link for the resource or data source.
When referencing complex examples, use the GitHub URL pattern: https://github.com/aiven/terraform-provider-aiven/tree/main/examples/{path}
When referencing resources or data sources, use the Terraform Registry URL pattern: https://registry.terraform.io/providers/aiven/aiven/latest/docs/{resources|data-sources}/{resource-name}
Format
Format for embedding examples in the Aiven docs
Terraform instructions should be added as a new tab within the existing tabs component in the target document. If no tabs component exists, create one.
Use the following format:
<Tabs groupId="group1">
<TabItem value="console" label="Console" default>
<!--Tech writer adds Console instructions here -->
</TabItem>
<!--You add a new tab with the label 'Terraform' -->
<TabItem value="terraform" label="Terraform">
<!--You add the TerraformSample component with a link to the file you found -->
<TerraformSample filename='resources/aiven_organizational_unit/resource.tf' />
<!--Always include this sentence with a link to the resource or data source in the Terraform docs -->
More information on this resource and its configuration options are available in the [Terraform documentation](https://registry.terraform.io/providers/aiven/aiven/latest/docs/resources/organizational_unit).
</TabItem>
</Tabs>
Important Remember to import the Tabs, TabItem, and TerraformSample components at the top of the document if they are not already imported. Place each on a new line:
import Tabs from '@theme/Tabs'; import TabItem from '@theme/TabItem'; import TerraformSample from '@site/src/components/CodeSamples/TerraformSample'; import TerraformApply from "@site/static/includes/terraform-apply-changes.md";
Format for linking to Terraform documentation
In cases where the example file is too complex or does not exist, add a new Terraform tab that links to the relevant documentation instead. Use the following format:
<Tabs groupId="group1">
<TabItem value="console" label="Console" default>
<!--Tech writer adds Console instructions here -->
</TabItem>
<TabItem value="terraform" label="Terraform">
Use [the aiven_organization_permission resource](https://registry.terraform.io/providers/aiven/aiven/latest/docs/resources/organization_permission).
</TabItem>
</Tabs>
Format for documenting resource attributes
When an attribute isn't shown in the example file, be sure to tell the user which attribute to use and link to the relevant documentation for the resource.
Use the following format:
<Tabs groupId="group1">
<TabItem value="console" label="Console" default>
<!--Tech writer adds Console instructions here -->
</TabItem>
<TabItem value="terraform" label="Terraform">
<!--If possible, link to the exact attribute using an anchor. Otherwise, link to the resource documentation.-->
Use the `technical_emails` attribute in [your `aiven_project` resource](https://registry.terraform.io/providers/aiven/aiven/latest/docs/resources/project#technical_emails-1).
</TabItem>
</Tabs>
## Format for embedding complex examples
Complex examples are most often used for get started guide or more advanced setups like integrations. In these cases, the files in the examples should be embedded separately as different steps to guide users through the process. You must always link to the GitHub URL for the full example, where users can simply clone and run the example themselves.
Use the following format:
```markdown
<Tabs groupId="group1">
<TabItem value="console" label="Console" default>
<!--Tech writer adds Console instructions here -->
</TabItem>
<TabItem value="terraform" label="Terraform">
<!--If needed, add context about the example. -->
<!--You can get context from the example's README file. -->
<!--Summarize, do not repeat, the README content. -->
In this example...
<!--Always provide a link to the example files in GitHub-->
The following example files are also available in the [Aiven Terraform Provider repository](https://github.com/aiven/terraform-provider-aiven/tree/main/examples/{path}) on GitHub.
<!--Start with the provider.tf file as step 1.-->
1. Create a file named `provider.tf` and add the following:
<TerraformSample filename='{service}/{example_name}/provider.tf' />
<!--Other relevant files should follow in a logical order.-->
<!--Do not repeat any code comments found in the files.-->
1. Create a file named `service.tf` and add the following:
<TerraformSample filename='{service}/{example_name}/service.tf' />
1. Create a file named `service_users.tf` and add the following:
<TerraformSample filename='{service}/{example_name}/service_users.tf' />
<!--Add the variables.tf file last.-->
1. Create a file named `variables.tf` and add the following:
<TerraformSample filename='{service}/{example_name}/variables.tf' />
<!--Instruct users to create a terraform.tfvars file with this standard step.-->
<!--Do not add an example file for this step.-->
1. Create the `terraform.tfvars` file and add the values for your token and project name.
<!--Only include output.tf files if they are included in the original example.-->
1. To output connection details, create a file named `output.tf` and add the following:
<TerraformSample filename='{service}/{example_name}/output.tf' />
<!--Always use this reusable component for the last step, which includes previewing and applying the changes.-->
<TerraformApply />
</TabItem>
</Tabs>
```

## ClickHouse get started guide with a specific use case example
<!--This example is used in the get started guide for ClickHouse. The example is somewhat more complex but self-contained, so it works well to embed the individual files as steps within the Aiven docs.-->
```markdown
In this example, an Aiven for ClickHouse service is used to store IoT sensor data. You create the service, two service users, and assign each user a role:
- Give the ETL user permission to insert data.
- Give the analyst user access to view data in the measurements database.
The following example files are also available in the [Aiven Terraform Provider repository](https://github.com/aiven/terraform-provider-aiven/tree/main/examples/clickhouse) on GitHub.
1. Create a file named `provider.tf` and add the following:
<TerraformSample filename='clickhouse/clickhouse_service/provider.tf' />
1. Create a file named `service.tf` and add the following:
<TerraformSample filename='clickhouse/clickhouse_service/service.tf' />
1. Create a file named `service_users.tf` and add the following:
<TerraformSample filename='clickhouse/clickhouse_service/service_users.tf' />
1. Create a file named `variables.tf` and add the following:
<TerraformSample filename='clickhouse/clickhouse_service/variables.tf' />
1. Create the `terraform.tfvars` file and add the values for your token and project name.
1. To output connection details, create a file named `output.tf` and add the following:
<TerraformSample filename='clickhouse/clickhouse_service/output.tf' />
<TerraformApply />
