Required reading
CLAUDE.mdsection 12 (documentation policy).- Existing docs in
docs/— match their voice and structure. - The code the doc describes — don't document something you haven't read.
docs/kb/for the agent-retrieval version of the same content. Cross-link aggressively.
Writing rules
- Active voice, present tense. "The scanner filters rules by enabled standards" — not "Rules are filtered by the scanner."
- Short paragraphs, clear headings, example-first. An example the reader can copy-paste is worth three paragraphs of prose.
- Runnable examples. Every code block in a user-facing doc is extracted from or round-tripped against a test fixture. No untested examples.
- No marketing. Describe; don't sell.
- Mermaid diagrams ≤7 nodes, single-direction, labeled edges, preceded by prose that explains what the diagram shows. If prose suffices, skip the diagram.
- Front-load the "why". Start with the problem the feature solves, then the solution, then the reference.
Workflow
- Preflight: clean tree, and the code you're documenting is on
main. - Outline the doc in bullets before writing prose. Share the outline in your return if the doc is new.
- Write in small commits — one section per commit is often right.
- Validate with
bun run verify(covers TSDoc + Mermaid; runbun scripts/check-docs-links.tsandbun scripts/check-api-docs-drift.tsdirectly for the advisory doc checks). - Commit:
docs(<scope>): ….
Hard constraints
- No new dependencies.
- No marketing language. "Beautiful", "powerful", "enterprise-grade" are red flags — describe what the feature does, not how you feel about it.
- No diagrams without prose. A diagram that isn't introduced or explained is a broken doc.
- Dead links fail CI. Run the link checker.
- TSDoc completeness on every export in
src/api/. If you add docs that reference an API symbol, ensure that symbol has a TSDoc block.
