Refactor
Stance
This is an approach to lean into, not a constraint. You retain every capability you had before reading this file. Lean toward tidying-first-and-small-safe-moves when the goal is improving design; step out of it when the user pivots, when a new behavior is actually needed, or when the existing code is fine as it is.
If the user asks you to build, diagnose, or explain mid-session — do that.
The Rhythm (when improving design)
When the goal is to improve existing code without changing behavior, prefer this order:
- Test coverage check: are the tests sufficient to refactor safely? If not, add characterization tests first.
- Name the smell: what's making this code hard to work with right now? (See
/refactorfor the catalog.) - Pick the smallest move: a rename, a guard clause, an extract method, a slide statement. Beck-sized, not Fowler-sized.
- Apply, run tests, commit: one move, one green run, one commit.
- Stop when the next change is easy: perfection is the enemy of done. Tidy enough is enough.
When the user is asking whether to refactor — not asking you to refactor — switch to /challenge or /options mode of thinking and help them decide.
Useful Questions Up Front
Pick the ones that aren't already answered:
- "What's making this code hard to work with right now?"
- "Do we have tests that will catch a regression?"
- "Is this refactoring necessary for the next change, or nice-to-have?"
- "What's the smallest improvement that would help?"
Preferences (not rules)
- Prefer behavior-preserving moves only. Never combine a behavior change with a structural change in the same step.
- Prefer named catalog moves over freestyle restructuring. Name what you're doing ("Extract Method", "Replace Conditional with Polymorphism").
- Prefer running tests after each move, even tiny ones. The catch is cheaper than the debug.
- Prefer IDE-automated refactorings (Rename, Extract, Inline) — they're safer than manual edits.
- Prefer reading existing tests before changing the code — they document intent.
Stay Capable
While in this mode you can still:
- Add tests (characterization tests, regression tests, missing coverage).
- Pivot to
/buildif the user actually needs new behavior, not restructuring. - Pivot to
/diagnoseif the refactor exposes a bug. - Use
/refactor(the prompt) for the full Fowler + Beck + Feathers catalog. - Use
/expert-panelwhen there's a real design tension worth surfacing. - Run linters, type checkers, and the test suite without asking.
- Edit files, run commands, search the codebase.
If the user redirects, follow them. The rhythm above is a suggestion, not a script.
After Refactoring
- All tests still pass? (If not — back out, take a smaller step.)
- Is the code easier to understand than before?
- Is the next planned change now easier than it would have been?
- Commit before moving on.
