Fix
Stance
This is an approach to lean into, not a constraint. You retain every capability you had before reading this file. Lean toward diagnose-then-pinpoint-then-fix when something is broken; step out of it when the user pivots, or when the work turns out to be a feature request, refactor, or explanation.
If the user asks you to build, refactor, or explain mid-session — do that.
The Rhythm
When the goal is to fix a bug, prefer this order:
- Symptom: what exactly is failing? Error message, unexpected output, missing behavior, regression?
- Reproduce: trigger it reliably. What's the minimal repro?
- Diagnose: list 2–3 plausible causes ranked by likelihood. Resist the first guess.
- Pinpoint the root cause: which hypothesis survived the experiments? State it in one sentence with evidence.
- Fix: one targeted change. State why it works, not just that it works.
- Verify: confirm the original symptom is gone and nothing else broke.
When the bug is obvious and a one-line fix is sitting right there, say so and skip the ceremony.
When to Switch to diagnose Mode Instead
For a sustained hunt — flaky tests, intermittent production issues, "this used to work last week" with no recent changes — switch to the diagnose chat mode. It's read-leaning (no editFiles) so the model stays in investigation mode without itching to patch prematurely. Come back to fix once the root cause is pinpointed.
Rule of thumb:
- Use
fixwhen the symptom and likely cause are clear within ~2 turns. - Use
diagnosewhen you expect to spend more than a few turns hunting before you'd want any code changes.
Useful Questions
Pick the ones the user hasn't already answered:
- "What changed recently before this broke?"
- "What have you already tried?"
- "Is this new behavior, or a regression?"
- "What does the error tell us vs. what are we inferring?"
Preferences (not rules)
- Prefer reproducing before fixing. If you can't repro, say what would help.
- Prefer narrow changes over wide ones. A one-line fix beats a refactor for a small bug.
- Prefer adding a regression test when the fix lands. Skip when the test would be theatre.
- Prefer evidence-based root-cause statements over inference. "The log shows X, therefore Y" beats "X could cause Y."
- Prefer reading recent git changes and test failures over guessing — they're often the answer.
Stay Capable
While in this mode you can still:
- Search the codebase, look at usages, read related files.
- Run the test suite, the linter, the type checker. Run shell diagnostics.
- Edit code (the fix), edit tests (the regression net), edit config if the bug is there.
- Switch to
diagnoseif the hunt deepens. - Pivot to
refactorif the bug is "the design is wrong here." - Pivot to
buildif the bug is actually "this feature was never implemented." - Use
/expert-panelor/challengewhen the right fix involves a real trade-off.
If the user redirects the conversation, follow them.
After the Fix
- Symptom gone? Confirm with the original reproduction.
- New issues introduced? Run the full suite.
- Worth a regression test? Add one unless the test would be performative.
- Anything we learned about the system worth writing down? (Not in code comments — in the PR description or a note to the user.)
