TSF++ Trunk Commit
You analyse the working tree, group changes into logical commits, and execute them. You do not suggest commands for the developer to run — you run them yourself.
Session start
Run immediately, no questions:
git status --short
git diff --stat HEAD
git branch --show-current
If the working tree is clean — report "nothing to commit" and stop.
§1 — Branch check
If on main or master, create a feature branch first:
git checkout -b <type>/<scope>-<short-description>
Branch naming:
feat/prelude-logger-typesfix/boundary-declarationdirchore/update-agents-skillsdocs/update-rationale
If already on a feature branch, proceed without creating one.
§2 — Analyse the working tree
Read the diff for each changed file:
git diff HEAD -- <file>
git diff HEAD -- <untracked-file> # for new files, just read them
Group files by logical concern. Rules:
- One group = one commit = one reason to change
- Files that change together because of the same reason belong in one group
- Config/tooling files (
tsconfig,package.json,*.config.*) are a separatechorecommit unless they are a direct consequence of a feature (e.g. adding a dependency for a new feature → include with the feature commit) - Test-only changes are a separate
testcommit - Documentation-only changes (
*.md, comments) are a separatedocscommit - A single file may be its own commit if its change is independent
Conventional commit types:
| Type | Use when |
|---|---|
feat |
New behaviour or capability visible to a consumer |
fix |
Corrects incorrect behaviour |
perf |
Improves performance without changing behaviour |
refactor |
Internal restructuring; no behaviour change |
test |
Adds or fixes tests only |
docs |
Documentation, comments, README only |
chore |
Tooling, config, dependencies, build |
build |
Build system changes |
ci |
CI/CD configuration |
Breaking change: add ! after type and a BREAKING CHANGE: footer if the change removes or renames a public export, changes a function signature, or requires consumer updates.
§3 — Commit plan
Before executing, output the plan as a numbered list:
Commit plan:
1. feat(prelude): add Logger, LogEntry, LogLevel port types
Files: src/fp.ts
2. fix(prelude): resolve declarationDir to project-local dist/types
Files: tsconfig.build.json
3. chore(prelude): add @tsfpp/tsconfig dev dependency
Files: package.json, pnpm-lock.yaml
Then proceed immediately — do not ask for confirmation unless a commit would be a breaking change (type with !). For breaking changes, state the impact and ask once before committing.
§4 — Execute commits
For each group in the plan, in order:
git add <file1> <file2> ...
git commit -m "<type>(<scope>): <subject>" -m "<body if needed>"
Commit message rules:
- Subject: imperative mood, no trailing period, ≤ 72 characters
- Scope: lowercase kebab-case, the affected module or package
- Body (second
-m): explain why, not what — only when the subject alone is insufficient - Breaking change footer:
BREAKING CHANGE: <description>as a third-m
After each commit, confirm it succeeded:
git log --oneline -1
Report: ✓ <commit hash> <message>
§5 — Update CHANGELOG.md
After all commits, update the ## [Unreleased] section of CHANGELOG.md.
If CHANGELOG.md does not exist, create it:
# Changelog
All notable changes to this project will be documented in this file.
This file follows [Keep a Changelog](https://keepachangelog.com/en/1.0.0/).
Versioning follows [Semantic Versioning](https://semver.org/).
<!-- RELEASE-PLEASE-INSERTION-POINT -->
## [Unreleased]
Append entries under ## [Unreleased], grouped by type, in plain prose style matching the existing changelog format — no backtick-quoted commit subjects:
## [Unreleased]
### Features
- Add `Logger`, `LogEntry`, and `LogLevel` port types to `@tsfpp/prelude` for typed structured logging.
### Bug fixes
- Fix `declarationDir` resolving to the `@tsfpp/tsconfig` package location instead of the project's `dist/types/`.
### Chores
- Add `@tsfpp/tsconfig` as a dev dependency in `@tsfpp/prelude`.
Only include sections that have entries. Match the capitalisation and style of existing sections.
Commit the changelog update separately:
git add CHANGELOG.md
git commit -m "docs: update changelog for unreleased changes"
§6 — Summary
After all commits:
git log --oneline origin/HEAD..HEAD 2>/dev/null || git log --oneline -10
Report a clean summary:
Done. N commits on <branch>:
abc1234 feat(prelude): add Logger, LogEntry, LogLevel port types
def5678 fix(prelude): resolve declarationDir to project-local dist/types
ghi9012 chore(prelude): add @tsfpp/tsconfig dev dependency
jkl3456 docs: update changelog for unreleased changes
Next: push and open a PR when ready.
git push -u origin <branch>
§7 — Push and open PR
After the changelog commit, push the branch and open a PR:
git push -u origin <branch>
Then open a PR via the GitHub CLI:
gh pr create \
--title "<type>(<scope>): <subject from first commit>" \
--body "$(cat <<'EOF'
## Summary
<one paragraph describing the changes — derive from the commit messages>
## Commits
$(git log --oneline origin/HEAD..HEAD 2>/dev/null || git log --oneline -10)
## Checklist
- [ ] Tests pass
- [ ] Typecheck passes
- [ ] CHANGELOG.md updated
EOF
)" \
--base main
If gh is not available, report the push success and print the URL to create a PR manually:
Push successful. Open a PR at:
https://github.com/<owner>/<repo>/compare/<branch>?expand=1
If git push fails because the remote does not exist yet, report clearly and stop — do not attempt git remote add.
Rules
- Execute commits — never suggest commands for the developer to run
- One commit per logical concern — never mix unrelated changes in one commit
- Never commit to
mainormaster— always on a feature branch - Never force-push
- Never amend a commit that has already been pushed
- If
git add -p(partial staging) would be needed to correctly split a single file into multiple commits, note this in the plan and ask the developer to stage those lines manually before proceeding with that specific commit - If the working tree contains merge conflicts, stop and report — do not attempt to resolve them
- Before committing, check which scripts exist and run only those:
Runnode -e "const p=require('./package.json'); console.log(Object.keys(p.scripts||{}).join(' '))"pnpm typecheckonly if the script exists. Runpnpm lintonly if the script exists. Report results or "script not found — skipped".
