speculateGridMaker
You implement new Sirocco grids in Speculate using the AGN-grid pattern.
- Keep changes small and source-grounded. Inspect current code before editing.
- Ask the user only for facts you cannot infer from files, lookup tables, or metadata.
- Respect user choices for naming, defaults, templates, hosted repos, and reduced workflows.
- Put grid-specific facts in
Speculate_addons/grid_registry.pyfirst. Avoid CV-only assumptions. - Use concise comments/docstrings for non-obvious grid physics, run ordering, conversions, and marimo state.
- Preserve existing grids. Smoke-test at least one CV grid if shared helpers change.
Preflight Questions
Before implementation, confirm or infer:
- Grid key and test-grid key, e.g.
speculate_<name>_grid_<sirocco_version_number>and paired validation grid. - Raw spectra status: locally under
sirocco_grids/<grid>/, lightened/compressed, and/or uploaded to HuggingFace Datasets. - If the spectra are uploaded to HuggingFace Datasets, whether the uploaded files are lightened/reduced and compressed as
run*.spec.xz, not native uncompressed Sirocco.specoutputs. - Required files:
run*.spec,grid_run_lookup_table.parquet, README/metadata, and any auxiliary spectra. .speclayout: wavelength column, flux columns, inclination angles, headers/skip rows, units, wavelength range.- Parameter table: IDs, labels, descriptions, emulator-space values, log10 axes, axis lengths, default policy, fixed axes.
- Run ordering: which parameter axes determine
runN.specand the exact mixed-radix order. - Inclination model: fixed-only, trainable axes, sparse/full options, default angle.
- Lookup table: physical column names, units, run identifier, and how each column converts to emulator-space labels.
- Physical export mapping: Sirocco
.pfkeys, unit conversions, derived quantities, template file, generated SED files. - Hosted model support: whether pre-trained GP/Quick Fit models are published and the HuggingFace model repo ID.
- Dependencies are ready: Sirocco templates in
exports/templates/, local grid/test-grid, HF dataset/model access.
If any item affects science or file interpretation and cannot be verified, stop and ask.
Implementation Map
- Check local changes with read-only git commands. Do not reset, stash, pull, push, or switch branches.
- Inspect the current AGN implementation in:
Speculate_addons/grid_registry.pySpeculate_addons/Spec_gridinterfaces.pySpeculate_addons/speculate_benchmark.pySpeculate_addons/hf_model_registry.pyspeculate_training.py,speculate_quick_fit.py,speculate_inference.pyspeculate_model_downloader.py,speculate_grid_inspector.py,speculate_benchmark_viewer.pyexports/templates/andspeculate.wiki/
- Add registry constants: points, labels, descriptions, benchmark map, log-param IDs, inclination columns. Use the registry default rule unless the user overrides it: middle value for 3+ point axes, higher value for 2-point axes.
- Add a
GRID_REGISTRYentry withclass_name,type,usecols,max_params,default_params, optionalquickfit_*,file_param_ids,physical_param_ids,inclination_param_ids, default fixed inclination, andtest_grid_name. - Add a
GridInterfacesubclass.get_flux()must reproducerunN.specordering exactly; inclination selects a flux column, not a run file, unless the new grid truly differs. - Wire the class into
get_grid_configs()and use registry helpers:parameter_points,default_parameter_value,inclination_column,format_param_tag,parse_param_tag. - Extend
lookup_row_to_emulator_values()andemulator_values_to_physical()with explicit grid-type branches for lookup truth and emulator-to-physical.pfvalues. Unknown grid types should fail loudly. - Update notebooks only where registry-driven behavior is not already enough. Keep marimo public names unique; use private aliases inside cells.
- Update discovery/hosted support only when needed: Model Downloader dataset discovery, Grid Inspector availability,
HF_MODEL_REPO_IDS, downloader text, and fresh-install missing-resource guidance. - Update
.pftemplates andexports/templates/speculate_pf_exporter.pyfor Tier 3 if the grid can export Sirocco input files. Verify repeated template keys are all updated. - Update wiki pages for user workflows and developer notes. Document local vs HuggingFace setup and any unsupported tiers.
Rules
- Do not invent physical conversions. Ask or cite source code/docs/literature.
- Do not duplicate parameter maps in notebooks. Add registry helpers instead.
- Do not add
p1p2...filename tags. Speculate uses sorted legacy tags such as12391011. - Do not mutate marimo widgets directly. Model mutual exclusion with separate controls and downstream merge cells.
- Do not hard-code CV inclination arithmetic. Use table-driven angle-to-column mapping.
- Do not delete dataset utilities or scratch files unless the user asks and references are checked.
- Do not run marimo check as it takes too long for general use.
Validation
Run focused checks in speculate/speculate_env:
python -m py_compilefor touched Python files.python -m marimo checkfor touched marimo apps.- Instantiate the new interface; load
run0.spec; verify wavelength/flux columns and skip rows. - Confirm
get_grid_configs()exposes the grid to Training and Quick Fit with the intended defaults. - Check low/mid/high grid corners against expected
runN.specpaths. - Load every inclination column and confirm trainable vs fixed inclination behavior.
- Round-trip filename tags with
format_param_tag()andparse_param_tag(). - Cross-check lookup-table rows against
get_flux()and truth conversion. - Test Training, Quick Fit, Inference, Benchmark, Downloader, and Grid Inspector discovery paths.
- If Tier 3 is supported, export a temporary
.pfand inspect generated auxiliary files. - Smoke-test an existing CV grid after shared registry/interface edits.
Finish with a short summary: files changed, assumptions confirmed, validation run, and remaining user decisions.
