- Type **"Vault Insights: Generate daily summary"**
- Check your vault for the new summary note!
### 3. Customize (Optional)

| Generate todo list | Aggregate tasks from configured folders |
| Analyze vault topics | Generate topic frequency analysis |
## Settings
| Setting | Description | Default |
|---------|-------------|---------|
| Output Folder | Where to save generated notes | `Insights/` |
| Lookback (Days) | How far back to scan | `1` (daily), `7` (weekly) |
| Todo Source Folders | Folders to scan for tasks | All |
| Exclude Folders | Folders to skip | `templates/` |
| Max Chart Items | Limit items in visualizations | `10` |
## Optional: AI-Powered Analysis
Vault Insights can use [Ollama](https://ollama.ai) for smarter topic extraction. This is **completely optional** and runs **locally on your machine**.
### Setup Ollama (Optional)
1. Install Ollama from [ollama.ai](https://ollama.ai)
2. Run a model: `ollama run llama3`
3. Enable in plugin settings: **Settings → Vault Insights → Enable Ollama**
### Privacy Note
- Ollama runs 100% locally - your notes never leave your device
- If Ollama isn't running, the plugin falls back to tag-based analysis
- Works great without AI - Ollama just adds extra insights

FAQ
Yes! All core features work on iOS and Android. The Ollama integration is desktop-only (since Ollama doesn't run on mobile), but the plugin gracefully falls back to tag-based analysis.
Dataview is a query language that shows results inline. Vault Insights generates actual markdown notes that you can edit, link to, and even publish. They're complementary!
No. Vault Insights uses Obsidian's built-in metadata cache, which is already computed. Generation typically takes < 1 second even for large vaults.
The current version uses sensible defaults. Custom templates are planned for a future release.
Privacy & Security
- ✅ 100% Local - All processing happens on your device
- ✅ No Telemetry - We don't collect any data
- ✅ No Network Calls - Core features work completely offline
- ✅ Ollama Optional - AI features use local models only
- ✅ Open Source - Audit the code yourself

## Settings Tab Help Text
Each setting should have clear descriptions:
```typescript
new Setting(containerEl)
.setName('Output Folder')
.setDesc('Where generated insight notes will be saved. Created if it doesn\'t exist.')
.addText(text => ...);
new Setting(containerEl)
.setName('Lookback Period (Days)')
.setDesc('How many days back to include in summaries. Use 1 for daily, 7 for weekly.')
.addSlider(slider => ...);
new Setting(containerEl)
.setName('Todo Source Folders')
.setDesc('Folders to scan for tasks. Leave empty to scan entire vault. One folder per line.')
.addTextArea(text => ...);
new Setting(containerEl)
.setName('Exclude Folders')
.setDesc('Folders to skip when scanning. Useful for templates and archives. One folder per line.')
.addTextArea(text => ...);
// Ollama section with clear header
containerEl.createEl('h3', { text: 'AI Features (Optional)' });
new Setting(containerEl)
.setName('Enable Ollama')
.setDesc('Use local AI for smarter topic extraction. Requires Ollama running on your computer. Desktop only.')
.addToggle(toggle => ...);
new Setting(containerEl)
.setName('Ollama URL')
.setDesc('Usually http://localhost:11434. Change only if you\'ve configured Ollama differently.')
.addText(text => ...);
Error Messages
User-friendly error messages:
Plugin Review Considerations
For Obsidian plugin submission, the README must:
- Clearly explain what the plugin does
- Not use "Obsidian" in the plugin name/ID
- Disclose any external services (Ollama is local, but mention it)
- Have screenshots or demo GIF
- Include license
- Not be a duplicate of existing functionality
What Reviewers Look For
- No innerHTML/outerHTML - Security concern
- No network calls without disclosure - Ollama is local, but document it
- Proper cleanup - Use register* helpers
- Mobile compatibility - If isDesktopOnly: false
- Clear value proposition - Why should users install this?
Writing Style Guidelines
Do
- Use simple, direct language
- Show examples
- Explain "why", not just "how"
- Be honest about limitations
- Use emoji sparingly for scannability
Don't
- Use jargon without explanation
- Promise features not yet built
- Overstate AI capabilities
- Hide the Ollama requirement
- Write walls of text
Output Format
When asked to write documentation:
