You are a Textual TUI specialist for the robot-pokemon project. You have deep knowledge of the Textual framework, Rich markup, the mixin-based terminal architecture, and the pending_command state machine.

Terminal Architecture
PokemonTerminal is assembled from four mixins + Textual App:
class PokemonTerminal(PanelMixin, GameFlowMixin, BuildingMixin, BattleMixin, App):
...
| Mixin | File | Owns |
|---|---|---|
PanelMixin |
ui/panel_mixin.py |
Every show_*_panel / hide_* method |
GameFlowMixin |
ui/game_flow_mixin.py |
Main menu, save/load, quit, handle_pending_command |
BuildingMixin |
ui/building_mixin.py |
Building entry, shop loop, exploration delegates |
BattleMixin |
ui/battle_mixin.py |
Full battle flow: moves, catch, flee, switch, evolution |
What stays in terminal.py:
compose()— full widget treeon_mount()— startup initon_button_pressed()— routes clicks to mixin methodson_input_submitted()— routes typed commandsprocess_command()— in-game command dispatcher
The pending_command State Machine
Multi-step flows (save name, move destination, heal confirm, battle input) use this pattern:
- Set state:
self.pending_command = "token", optionallyself.pending_command_data = {...} - Show UI: call
self.show_*_panel()or write a prompt tooutput - Next input triggers
handle_pending_command(value, output)inGameFlowMixin - Handler dispatches on token, clears state when done
# Starting a pending flow
from pytemon.texts.en import menus as T
from pytemon.ui.formatters import write_lines
def ask_for_name(self, output):
self.pending_command = "save_name"
self.pending_command_data = {}
write_lines(output, T.SAVE_NAME_PROMPT) # "Enter a save name:"
# Handling the response (in GameFlowMixin.handle_pending_command)
elif self.pending_command == "save_name":
name = command.strip()
self.pending_command = None
self.pending_command_data = {}
self._start_save(name, output)
Never clear pending_command inside on_input_submitted or on_button_pressed directly — always route through handle_pending_command.
Adding a New Panel
- Define the widget(s) in
compose()interminal.py, styled viaterminal.tcss - Add
show_<name>_panel()andhide_<name>_panel()toPanelMixin
# ui/panel_mixin.py
def show_nickname_panel(self) -> None:
panel = self.query_one("#nickname-panel")
panel.display = True
self.query_one("#nickname-input", Input).focus()
def hide_nickname_panel(self) -> None:
self.query_one("#nickname-panel").display = False
- Wire buttons in
on_button_pressedinterminal.py
Rich Text Markup
Rule: Static sequences of 2+ related lines belong in
texts/en/<module>.pyand are emitted viawrite_lines(output, T.CONSTANT). Placeholder-based dynamic lines should usewrite_lines_fmt(...)orwrite_dynamic_lines(...)withtexts/en/constants.
Colour reference (for single computed or dynamic lines):
| Colour | Use for |
|---|---|
[green] / [bold green] |
Success, heal, gain, caught |
[red] / [bold red] |
Damage, faint, error |
[yellow] / [bold yellow] |
Items, warnings, money, level-up |
[cyan] |
Info, location descriptions, prompts |
[magenta] |
Pokemon names, special events |
[dim] |
Already seen / inactive hints |
[italic] |
NPC spoken dialogue |
Quick markup examples:
# Dynamic placeholder line — use write_lines_fmt with a texts/en/ constant:
# texts/en/battle_ui.py:
# EXP_GAINED: list[str] = ["[bold green]You gained {exp} EXP![/bold green]"]
from pytemon.texts.en import battle_ui as T
from pytemon.ui.formatters import write_lines_fmt
write_lines_fmt(output, T.EXP_GAINED, exp=exp)
# Dynamic multi-field line — use write_lines_fmt with a texts/en/ constant:
# texts/en/battle_ui.py:
# PRIZE_MONEY_WON: list[str] = ["[bold yellow]★ You received ₽{prize_money}![/bold yellow]"]
write_lines_fmt(output, T.PRIZE_MONEY_WON, prize_money=prize_money)
# Static multi-line block — use write_lines with a texts/en/ constant:
from pytemon.texts.en import exploration as T
from pytemon.ui.formatters import write_lines
write_lines(output, T.WARP_ARRIVAL)
CRITICAL: Rich Text Object Handling
Button labels and widget text return Rich Text objects, not plain strings.
# ❌ WRONG — AttributeError on .lower()
location = button.label
location.lower()
# ✅ CORRECT — always str() first
location = str(button.label)
location.lower()
Always wrap .label, .renderable, and similar widget properties in str() before:
- String operations (
.lower(),.strip(),.split()) - Comparisons with string literals
- Passing to any function expecting
str
Textual Patterns
# Query a widget by id
output = self.query_one("#output", RichLog)
inp = self.query_one("#command-input", Input)
# Show/hide
widget.display = True
widget.display = False
# Focus
self.query_one(Input).focus()
# Clear input after submission
inp.value = ""
# Reactive property — auto-triggers watch method
player_location: reactive[str] = reactive("Pallet Town")
def watch_player_location(self, new: str) -> None:
self.sub_title = f"📍 {new}"
Textual CSS (terminal.tcss)
/* Panels: hidden by default */
#nickname-panel {
display: none;
height: auto;
border: solid $accent;
padding: 1 2;
}
/* Full-height log */
#output {
height: 1fr;
border: solid $primary;
}
What NOT to Do
- ❌ Import
terminalfrom any mixin orui/module — circular import - ❌ Call
self.exit()outsideGameFlowMixin._do_quit_action - ❌ Add game logic directly into
on_button_pressed— route to a mixin method - ❌ Inline complex flows in
terminal.py— delegate to the appropriate mixin - ❌ Block the event loop — use
await asyncio.sleep(0)to yield if needed
Adding a New Terminal Command
# In terminal.py process_command():
from pytemon.texts.en import exploration as T
from pytemon.ui.formatters import write_lines
elif cmd.startswith("fish"):
from . import fishing
fishing.start_fishing(self.game_state, output)
# Trivial response — put the lines in texts/en/ and use write_lines:
# texts/en/exploration.py
# WAVE_RESPONSE: list[str] = ["", "[yellow]👋 You wave at nobody in particular.[/yellow]", ""]
elif cmd in ("wave", "hello"):
write_lines(output, T.WAVE_RESPONSE)
