PostgreSQL Best Practices

• Use timestamptz (not timestamp) for timezone awareness
• Use jsonb (not json) for semi-structured data
• Always include down() method in migrations
• Use CHECK constraints for data validation at DB level
• Use citext for case-insensitive text comparisons

Index Strategy

• Foreign keys: always index foreign key columns
• Search columns: index columns used in WHERE, ORDER BY, GROUP BY
• Composite indexes: most selective column first
• Partial indexes: use WHERE clause for subset queries (status = 'active')
• Unique constraints: enforce data integrity at DB level
• Covering indexes: include frequently selected columns to avoid table lookup

Query Optimization Workflow

1. Identify — EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS) SELECT ... via database-query
2. Analyze — look for Seq Scan on large tables, Nested Loop with high rows, Sort without index
3. Optimize — add indexes, rewrite queries, suggest eager loading changes to developer agent
4. Verify — re-run EXPLAIN to confirm improvement

N+1 Detection
