Context Compaction — MVS Agent
When context compacts
- Roughly 150–200 messages or when total content nears the model's context limit.
- Screenshots and tool output (grep, file reads, terminal) consume much more space than text.
- Long, screenshot-heavy sessions compact sooner than text-only chats.
What compaction does
- Older conversation is summarized; recent messages stay full.
- Work can resume, but fine detail from early in the chat may be lost.
Agent behavior
- If the user refers to something from earlier and you don't have it in context, explain that it may have been compacted and ask them to re-share or summarize.
- For very long, multi-part tasks (many screenshots, many steps), consider suggesting a fresh chat if context feels strained.
- Don't assume you remember everything from the start of the session — re-verify critical details when needed.
