Design Constraints

Code Quality Checklist

7. Decision-Making Guidelines
A. GUI Element Wrapper Philosophy
Option A: Thin Wrapper (Recommended)
- Expose underlying COM object properties
- Minimal abstraction
- Pro: Simple, close to SAP API
- Con: User code must know COM quirks
Option B: Thick Abstraction
- Hide COM, expose only Pythonic interface
- Pro: Cleaner for users
- Con: More code to maintain
Decision: Option A for Phase 1 (thin wrapper). Upgrade to thick abstraction in Phase 5 if feedback demands.
B. Error Handling Strategy
Transient Error (network, SAP busy):
- Log warning, return None/empty
- Caller decides to retry
Permanent Error (element not found):
- Log debug, return None (expected)
Unexpected Error (programming bug):
- Log exception, re-raise
C. Data Extraction Performance

9. Edge Cases & Constraints
A. SAP Version Differences
- Different SAP versions have different UI layouts
- Solution: Don't assume element IDs; use find_by_type, search tree
B. Dynamic Element IDs
- Some elements have IDs that change each session
- Solution: Reference elements by hierarchical path, not ID
C. Large Grid Pagination
- ALV with 100,000 rows can't be read all at once
- Solution: Implement scroll-and-read strategy, yield batches

11. Critical Reminders
- COM Thread Boundary: Never call SAP methods directly; always go through COM bridge
- Element IDs Are SAP Layout Dependent: Don't hardcode IDs; use tree search. Exception: the OK-code field ID in
navigate_to_transaction()is a known configuration requirement — it is isolated toOKCODE_FIELD_IDand must be moved toAppConfig.sap.okcode_field_idbefore production - Busy Flag Check: Always wait for screen ready before reading; SAP might still be processing
- Error Logging: Log every element operation for debugging (screenshots, element not found, etc.)
- No Assumptions About Versions: Code must work across SAP 4.6c, ECC 5.0, S/4HANA
- Test with Mock SAP: Unit tests should not require real SAP; mock COM objects
- Document Grid Limitations: If 10k-row grid is slow, document and offer pagination
- Coordinate with Inspector Dev: Phase 2 builds on top of this; verify API compatibility
