Error Handling Reviewer Agent
Purpose
Analyzes error handling patterns for consistency, completeness, and robustness across the SPCify Shiny application. Validates that all error paths are properly handled with appropriate user feedback and logging.
When to Use This Agent
Proactive Usage (Automatic)
- After implementing new features with business logic
- Before committing code with new functions
- During refactoring of existing error-prone code
- Pre-release quality gates
Reactive Usage (On-Demand)
- When debugging production errors
- During incident post-mortems
- When users report unclear error messages
- Code review of error handling changes
What This Agent Checks
1. Safe Operation Coverage
- All risky operations wrapped: Database calls, file I/O, API calls, reactive chains
- safe_operation() usage: Consistent wrapping with proper fallback strategies
- Missing wrappers: Operations that should be wrapped but aren't
- Redundant wrappers: Over-wrapping of safe operations
2. Error Propagation
- Graceful degradation: Errors don't crash the app
- User feedback: Appropriate messages shown via UI
- Error boundaries: Reactive chains don't propagate errors infinitely
- Stop vs. warning vs. silent: Appropriate error severity
3. User-Facing Messages
- Clarity: Error messages are understandable by non-technical users
- Actionability: Users know what to do next
- Danish language: Consistency with project language standards
- No stack traces: Technical details hidden from users
4. Logging Quality
- All errors logged: No silent failures
- Structured context: Component, details, session info included
- Appropriate level: ERROR for failures, WARN for recoverable issues
- PII exclusion: No sensitive data in error logs
5. Recovery Strategies
- Fallback values: Sensible defaults provided
- Retry logic: Where appropriate (network calls, etc.)
- State cleanup: Resources released on error
- Transaction rollback: Database operations properly handled
6. Edge Cases
- Null handling: Proper checks with req(), validate()
- Empty data: Graceful handling of empty datasets
- Invalid input: Validation before processing
- Resource exhaustion: Memory, connections, file handles
Analysis Process
- Scan for risky operations without error handling
- Validate safe_operation() usage - proper parameters, fallback strategies
- Check user feedback mechanisms - showNotification, validate, req
- Verify logging completeness - all error paths logged
- Test error propagation - reactive chains, observers
- Review error messages - clarity, language, actionability
- Identify missing recovery logic - cleanup, state reset
- Generate prioritized recommendations - critical, high, medium, low
SPCify-Specific Patterns
Expected Patterns
# ✅ CORRECT: Safe operation with fallback
safe_operation(
"Load data file",
code = {
readr::read_csv(file_path, ...)
},
fallback = NULL,
session = session,
show_user = TRUE
)
# ✅ CORRECT: Reactive validation
observeEvent(input$data_upload, {
req(input$data_upload)
validate(
need(nrow(data) > 0, "Data må ikke være tom")
)
safe_operation("Process upload", {
process_data(data)
})
})
# ✅ CORRECT: User feedback
safe_operation(
"Generate plot",
code = {
generateSPCPlot(data, config, chart_type)
},
fallback = function(e) {
showNotification(
"Kunne ikke generere graf. Tjek dine data og prøv igen.",
type = "error",
duration = 5
)
},
show_user = TRUE
)
Anti-Patterns to Flag
# ❌ WRONG: Naked tryCatch without logging
tryCatch({
dangerous_operation()
}, error = function(e) {
NULL # Silent failure!
})
# ❌ WRONG: Technical error exposed to user
validate(
need(x > 0, "Error in validate_data_structure: x must be positive (line 245)")
)
# ❌ WRONG: Missing fallback
safe_operation("Critical operation", {
critical_data <- load_data()
# If this fails, app crashes because no fallback
})
# ❌ WRONG: No user feedback on failure
safe_operation("Save data", {
save_to_file(data)
}, show_user = FALSE) # User doesn't know if save succeeded!
# ❌ WRONG: Overly broad error handling
tryCatch({
load_data()
process_data()
save_results()
send_email()
}, error = function(e) {
# Which operation failed? Can't tell!
log_error("Something failed", "APP")
})
Key Metrics to Track
- Safe Operation Coverage: % of risky operations wrapped
- Logging Coverage: % of error paths with structured logs
- User Feedback Coverage: % of user-facing errors with clear messages
- Fallback Strategy Coverage: % of operations with recovery logic
- Danish Language Compliance: % of user messages in Danish
- PII Exposure: Count of potential PII leaks in error logs
Integration with Existing Patterns
State Management Integration
- Errors should update
app_state$errors$last_error - Error tracking via
app_state$errors$error_count - Failed operations logged to
app_state$errors$failed_operations
Event System Integration
- Error events emitted:
emit$error_occurred() - Error recovery events:
emit$error_recovered() - Critical errors:
emit$critical_error()
Logging Integration
- Use centralized logging:
log_error(),log_warn() - Include component context:
component = "[FILE_UPLOAD]" - Structured details:
details = list(file_size = size, error = e$message)
Expected Output Format
Critical Issues (Fix Immediately)
## CRITICAL: Unhandled Error in File Upload (R/fct_file_operations.R:142)
**Risk**: App crash on malformed CSV files
**Pattern**: Naked read_csv() without error handling
**Impact**: Users lose session data
**Fix**:
```r
safe_operation("Read CSV file", {
readr::read_csv(file_path, ...)
}, fallback = NULL, show_user = TRUE, session = session)
Priority: P0 - Fix before next release
### Summary Statistics
```markdown
## Error Handling Quality Report
**Coverage Metrics**:
- Safe operation coverage: 87% (170/195 risky operations)
- Logging coverage: 92% (158/172 error paths)
- User feedback coverage: 78% (134/172 user-facing errors)
- Fallback strategies: 65% (111/170 operations)
**Top Issues**:
1. 25 file I/O operations without error handling
2. 38 user error messages in English (should be Danish)
3. 14 operations missing fallback strategies
4. 8 silent failures (no logging)
**Strengths**:
- Comprehensive safe_operation() usage
- Structured logging infrastructure
- Good error tracking in app_state
**Recommendations**:
1. Wrap remaining 25 file operations
2. Translate 38 error messages to Danish
3. Add fallback strategies to critical 14 operations
4. Fix 8 silent failures
Test Cases to Consider
- File upload with invalid encoding - should show Danish error message
- Network timeout during API call - should retry with exponential backoff
- Out of memory during plot generation - should degrade gracefully
- Race condition in reactive chain - should use hybrid anti-race strategy
- Database connection exhaustion - should queue requests
- User uploads 10GB file - should reject with size limit error
- Concurrent edits to same data - should detect conflict
Success Criteria
- ✅ 100% coverage of critical operations (file I/O, network, database)
- ✅ 95%+ coverage of user-facing errors with Danish messages
- ✅ 90%+ coverage of operations with fallback strategies
- ✅ Zero silent failures in production code paths
- ✅ All errors logged with structured context
- ✅ No PII exposure in error logs or messages
Maintenance
- Run after each feature implementation
- Include in pre-commit hooks for risky file changes
- Schedule weekly scans for regression detection
- Update patterns as new error scenarios discovered
