Query Guidelines
- When querying Prometheus, always specify the datasource UID
- Use
list_prometheus_metric_namesto discover available metrics before querying - For Loki, use
list_loki_label_namesto understand available labels first - Use relative time ranges (e.g., "now-1h") rather than absolute timestamps where possible

Known data caveats
- Proxmox root-fs metric is misleading:
node_filesystem_*{mountpoint="/"}onproxmox-1/proxmox-2reports the small Proxmox root sliver only (~0.3–0.4% used). Real storage lives on ZFS pools and is not reflected in node_exporter root-fs metrics. For Proxmox capacity, use the InfluxDB-Proxmox datasource or query non-root mountpoints. - QNAP
fileserverSNMP scrape (snmp_qnap/snmp_qnap_long) is borderline:snmp_qnapruns right at the 60 sscrape_timeoutand flaps under load (observed ~23 transitions/hour, sustained down at 2026-04-20).snmp_qnap_long(~83 s) is stable because it has a longer timeout. Ifsnmp_qnapflaps/fails, first checkscrape_duration_seconds{job="snmp_qnap"}vs the timeout and consider raisingscrape_timeout/scrape_intervalor trimming OIDs before treating it as a real outage. Also verifygrafana_snmp_targetsand SNMP v3 auth.
Alert rule caveat: snmp_exporter string-typed status metrics
- QNAP SNMP status metrics (
raidStatus,volumeStatus,hdStatus, etc.) are exposed by snmp_exporter as value1with the actual status in a same-named label (hex-encoded ASCII). E.g. healthy looks likeraidStatus{raidStatus="0x5265616479"} 1—0x5265616479decodes toReady. - Therefore
expr: raidStatuswithgt 0(the currentQNAP Volume Degradedrule, uidqnap-volume-degraded-1, ~line 256 ofprovisioning_alertrules.yaml.j2) always fires whenever the metric is scraped — it's a permanent false positive, not a real degradation. Same trap applies to any rule built on a string-typed SNMP indicator. - Correct pattern: alert on the label, e.g.
raidStatus{raidStatus!="0x5265616479"}(or build a numeric mapping in snmp.yml). Also raisefor:above0s.
Loki caveat: Docker logs on docker-1/docker-2 have no container_name label
ansible/roles/alloy/templates/alloy_config.alloy.j2loki.source.docker "containers"only attaches static labelshostandsource=docker. It does not relabel__meta_docker_container_name/__meta_docker_container_label_com_docker_compose_serviceinto stream labels.- Consequence: any LogQL aggregation
by (container_name)on{source="docker"}collapses to a single null-labelled series, and alerts likeloki-errors-1(High Error Rate in Logs) annotatecontainer=[no value]. Onlyjob="systemd-journal"streams (e.g. HA add-ons fromhomeassistant-vm) carrycontainer_name. - Fix: insert a
discovery.relabel "docker"block mapping__meta_docker_container_name→container_nameand feed its output asloki.source.docker.targets.
Alert rule caveat: loki-errors-1 self-feedback / false matches (FIXED 2026-04-20)
- Original rule expr
{source="docker"} |~(?i)(error|fatal|panic)`` matched the literal substring "error" anywhere in a line. This caught benign Grafana/Loki internals (App runner exited without error,caller=metrics.go … query="…(?i)(error|fatal|panic)…"— Loki logging its own query — andngalert.sender.router … Sending alertslines emitted because the rule fires) producing a self-sustaining feedback loop once it tripped. - Fixed in
provisioning_alertrules.yaml.j2(uidloki-errors-1) to:sum by (host, container_name) (count_over_time({source="docker"} != "caller=scheduler_processor.go" != "caller=retry.go" != "caller=metrics.go" != "caller=engine.go" != "caller=ingester.go" != "App runner exited without error" !~ "logger=(ngalert|provisioning|infra\.usagestats)" | logfmt | level=~"(?i)error|fatal|panic" != "context canceled" [5m])) - Verification approach: 24h
query_rangewithstep=300against the new expr — peak should sit well belowgrafana_alert_loki_error_threshold(currently 10). Pre-fix peak was unbounded (always firing). Post-fix peak observed: 7 (real Grafana provisioning startup failures, worth alerting on). - Docker logs on docker-1/2 are logfmt, not JSON (
| jsonreturns 0 matches;| logfmtparses correctly). Stream labellevelonly exists onjob=systemd-journalstreams, never onsource=docker— must parse.
Deleting file-provisioned alert rules (409 Conflict)
- Grafana refuses to delete rules whose
provenance_type.provenance = 'file'even when the API/MCP call setsX-Disable-Provenance: true(disable_provenance: true). That header lets you edit a provisioned rule but does not bypass deletion. - When a provisioning template is removed/renamed, the rule is orphaned in the DB and keeps firing. To clean up:
- Clear the provenance row directly in Grafana's sqlite DB on
docker-1:
(Thessh docker-1 'sudo sqlite3 /etc/docker-storage/grafana-stack/grafana/grafana.db \ "DELETE FROM provenance_type WHERE record_key='\''<UID>'\'' AND record_type='\''alertRule'\'';"'grafanacontainer image has nosqlite3binary, so run sqlite on the host.) - Then call the normal MCP
alerting_manage_rulesdelete— it will succeed.

getreturning 404. DB path is/etc/docker-storage/grafana-stack/grafana/grafana.db; provenance table schema:(record_key TEXT, record_type TEXT, provenance TEXT, org_id INTEGER).
Alert rule caveat: noDataState on negative-presence queries
- Rules in
ansible/roles/grafana/templates/provisioning_alertrules.yaml.j2such asHost Down(up == 0),Container Down, etc. are negative-presence queries — they return an empty vector when healthy. IfnoDataState: Alertingis set on these, Grafana fires synthetic NoData alerts with no labels, producing annotations likeHost [no value] is downandValues: {}. For these queriesnoDataStateshould beOK(orNoData), notAlerting. When you see[no value]in a fired alert, suspect this misconfiguration first.
Change Logging
After any task that modifies files, runs commands on remote hosts, or changes configuration, always use the change-logging skill to record the change. This is mandatory — never skip it when changes have been made.
