Piece Notation
- K = King
- Q = Queen
- R = Rook

Algebraic Notation
Use standard algebraic notation for positions and moves:
- Board squares: a1-h8 (files a-h, ranks 1-8)
- Moves: e4 (pawn to e4), Nf3 (knight to f3), Qxd5 (queen captures on d5)
- Castling: O-O (kingside), O-O-O (queenside)
- Check: + suffix, Checkmate: # suffix
Special Move Requirements
Castling:
- Neither king nor rook has moved
- No pieces between king and rook
- King not in check, doesn't pass through check, doesn't land in check
- Different square requirements for O-O vs O-O-O
En Passant:
- Opponent pawn just moved two squares forward
- Your pawn is on the 5th rank (white) or 4th rank (black)
- Capture must happen immediately on the next turn
Pawn Promotion:
- Pawn reaches opposite end of board (rank 8 for white, rank 1 for black)
- Must promote to Q, R, B, or N (not king, not stay as pawn)
