Context
The site is a SvelteKit app deployed on Vercel. Key architectural facts:
- Homepage (
/) hasssr=false— meta tags come fromapp.htmlfallbacks, not<svelte:head> - SEO pages (
/intro/*,/example/*) havessr=true+prerender=true— full SSR with static HTML - Docs pages (
/docs/*) havessr=true+prerender=true— statically generated - App pages (
/s/*) havessr=false— not indexed, behind auth - Sitemap is dynamically generated at
/sitemap.xmlbyfrontend/apps/web_app/src/routes/sitemap.xml/+server.ts - OG image is at
/images/og-image.jpg robots.txtis at/robots.txt- Translations use i18n with
$text()store — meta tags using$text()won't render in SSR unless the store is initialized server-side

Audit Protocol
Run these checks in order. Use curl via Bash for HTTP requests (with -s flag and a custom User-Agent). Use Grep/Read for source code analysis.
Phase 1: Production crawl (HTTP checks)
-
Fetch sitemap —
curl -s https://openmates.org/sitemap.xml- Count total URLs
- Verify homepage (
/) is present - Check for duplicate URLs
- Verify
lastmoddates are not all identical (sign of fake dates) - Check that all listed URLs return HTTP 200 (sample 10-15 URLs across all categories)
-
Fetch robots.txt — verify it references the sitemap and allows crawling
-
Audit meta tags on key pages — for each page,
curl -sand check:<title>tag present and meaningful (not empty, not a raw i18n key)<meta name="description">present and >50 chars<link rel="canonical">present and matches the page URL<meta name="robots">present (or absent = default index,follow)<meta property="og:title">present<meta property="og:description">present<meta property="og:image">present and URL is reachable (HTTP 200)<meta property="og:url">present and matches canonical<meta property="og:type">present<meta property="og:site_name">present<meta name="twitter:card">present (should besummary_large_image)<meta name="twitter:image">present- JSON-LD
<script type="application/ld+json">present (where applicable)
Pages to check:
/(homepage)/intro/for-everyone/example(listing)- One example chat page (pick the first from sitemap)
/docs(index)- One docs subpage (pick from sitemap)
/docs/api
-
OG image validation — fetch the OG image URL, verify:
- HTTP 200 response
- Content-Type is an image
- Note the dimensions if possible (1200x630 is ideal for social sharing)
-
Hreflang check — does the homepage include
hreflangalternates? Do subpages?
Phase 2: Source code analysis (file checks)
-
SSR configuration audit — for every route under
src/routes/, check the+page.tsor+layout.tsforssrsetting:- Pages that should be indexed MUST have
ssr=true(or default, which is true) - Flag any indexable page with
ssr=false— meta tags won't be in HTML
- Pages that should be indexed MUST have
-
Meta tag completeness matrix — read every
+page.sveltethat has<svelte:head>and build a matrix:- Which pages have title, description, OG tags, Twitter tags, canonical, JSON-LD?
- Flag inconsistencies (e.g., some pages have JSON-LD, others don't)
-
i18n key leak check — look for meta tag values that use
$text()or$derived($text())on pages withssr=false. These will render as raw i18n keys (e.g., "metadata.webapp.title") to crawlers. -
Canonical URL consistency — verify all canonical URLs use
https://openmates.org(not relative, not http://, not a dev domain) -
Internal link audit — check if key pages link to each other:
- Does the homepage link to
/intro/*,/example,/docs? - Do docs pages have breadcrumbs with proper links?
- Does the homepage link to
Phase 3: Structured data validation
- JSON-LD audit — for pages that have JSON-LD:
- Is it valid JSON?
- Does it use appropriate schema.org types?
- Are required fields present for the chosen type?

Scoring Guide
Start at 100, deduct points:
- No sitemap or empty: -20
- Homepage missing from sitemap: -10
- Missing
<title>on any indexed page: -10 per page - Missing OG tags on any indexed page: -5 per page
- Missing Twitter card tags: -3 per page
- No JSON-LD on landing pages: -5
- SSR disabled on indexed pages (meta tags invisible to crawlers): -15 per page
- Fake/identical
lastmodon all sitemap entries: -5 - OG image returns non-200: -10
- Broken canonical URLs: -10 per page
- i18n keys leaking as meta tag values: -10 per page
- No hreflang on multilingual pages: -3
- Missing
robotsmeta tag where needed: -2 per page
Rules
- Be specific. Every issue must reference the exact file path and line number.
- Be actionable. Every issue must have a concrete fix, not just "improve SEO."
- Don't report non-issues. Pages behind auth (
/s/*) are correctly not indexed — don't flag them. - Curl timeout: Use 15s timeout. If a page is slow, note it but don't fail the audit.
- Sample, don't exhaustively crawl. For docs (100+ pages), sample 3-5 representative pages.
- Compare against best practices, not perfection. A score of 80+ is good.
