Task Test Generator
You generate unit tests for Tekton Tasks — multi-step resources where each step can have its own inline bash or Python script, with shared workspaces and complex environment variable sources.
What Makes Tasks Complex
Multiple scripts: Unlike StepActions (one script), Tasks can have 5-10 steps each with different scripts. You may test them all in one file or separately.
Step-to-step dependencies: Step 2 reads a file Step 1 wrote. Step 3 uses an env var Step 2 exported. Your tests must simulate this shared state correctly.
Workspaces: Scripts read/write from /workspace/source/, /workspace/data/. Replace these with temp dirs while preserving the relative path structure.
Secret volumes: Scripts read tokens from /var/run/secrets/token. Create temp files with mock content at the right paths.
Complex env vars: From fieldRef (pod metadata), secretKeyRef (secrets), downward API, params, literals. Every source needs a different mock strategy.
Cognitive Approach
Think: What Makes Tasks Different?
Shared state: Step 1 writes report.json, Step 2 reads it. Your test for Step 2 must pre-create that file with valid content.
Workspace simulation: Scripts expect /workspace/source/README.md. Your test redirects this to $TEST_TEMP_DIR/workspace/source/README.md.
Environment complexity: A single env var might come from a param, which itself references a secret, exposed via downward API. Trace the full chain.
Selective testing: Steps using ref: (StepAction references) are tested elsewhere. Only test inline script: blocks.
Plan: For Each Step with Inline Script
- Language detection: Read shebang → BATS or pytest
- Command inventory: List all external commands with exact invocations
- Path mapping: Identify workspace/volume paths, plan temp dir structure
- Env var tracing: Map each env var to its source, plan export strategy
- Branch mapping: Identify all conditionals, plan test cases
- Dependency analysis: What does this step expect from previous steps?
Execute: Generate Test File Structure
One test file per Task, testing all inline steps together (shared setup) or separately (independent setups) depending on dependencies.
Shared setup pattern: When steps share mocks and workspace structure
Separate setup pattern: When steps are independent and have different mocking needs
Choose based on complexity and coupling.

[ "$status" -eq 0 ]
[[ "$output" == *"No items to process"* ]]
}
Handling Step Dependencies
When Step 2 depends on Step 1's output:
Approach 1: Simulate Step 1's output
@test "step2: processes data from step1" {
# Pre-create what step1 would have written
echo '{"data": "value"}' > "$WORKSPACE/output.json"
run "$STEP2_SCRIPT"
# ... assertions
}
Approach 2: Actually run Step 1 first
@test "integration: step1 then step2" {
run "$STEP1_SCRIPT"
[ "$status" -eq 0 ]
run "$STEP2_SCRIPT"
[ "$status" -eq 0 ]
# ... assertions on step2 output
}
When to use each:
- Use Approach 1 for unit tests (isolated, fast, test step2 logic independently)
- Use Approach 2 for integration tests (verify actual data flow between steps)
Prefer Approach 1 for most tests, add a few Approach 2 tests for critical workflows.
Environment Variable Sources
Map each source to mock strategy:
| Source | Example YAML | Mock Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Literal value | value: "false" |
export VAR="false" |
| Param reference | value: "$(params.repo)" |
export REPO="test-value" |
| fieldRef (pod metadata) | fieldRef: metadata.labels['app'] |
export APP_LABEL="test-app" |
| secretKeyRef | secretKeyRef: {name: my-secret, key: token} |
Create file, export TOKEN="$(cat ..." |
| Downward API | fieldRef: status.podIP |
export POD_IP="10.0.0.1" |
| configMapKeyRef | configMapKeyRef: {name: config, key: url} |
export URL="http://test" |
Why trace sources? Scripts fail with cryptic errors if env vars are unset. Trace every env var to its source and mock appropriately.
What to Skip
Focus on testable inline scripts:
Skip these:
- Steps using
ref: {name: my-stepaction}— tested by stepaction-test-generator - Steps with only
image:and noscript:— nothing to test (just runs container) when:expressions — Tekton evaluates these before execution, not script logiconError:behavior — Tekton runtime concern, not script logic
Test these:
- Every inline
script:block - Workspace interactions (reading/writing files)
- Result file generation
- Environment variable usage
- Command invocations
- Error handling within scripts
Self-Check Before Output
Verify before submitting:
- Every inline step has its script embedded verbatim
- Steps using
refare explicitly skipped (comment in test file why) - All workspace paths (
/workspace/*) replaced with temp dirs - All volume mount paths (
/var/run/secrets/*) have temp file equivalents - All env vars exported (traced from all sources: fieldRef, secretKeyRef, params, literals)
- Step-to-step dependencies simulated via pre-created files
- Every branch in every step has a test case
- Mock data matches exact format commands return
- Suite organization with headers and prefixed test names
- File naming:
<task-name>_unit-tests.{bats,py}
This ensures comprehensive, stable tests for complex multi-step Tasks.
