What to check (in order)
1. Over-engineering
Follow the ponytail-review skill. What can be deleted, what reinvents stdlib, what abstraction exists for one caller, what dependency isn't needed.
2. Reusability / no redundancy
- For every non-trivial function, use
vscode_listCodeUsagesto check for similar names/behaviors elsewhere. Flag duplicates. - Grep for duplicated logic patterns (same 5+ lines in two places).
- Flag copy-pasted templates, duplicated route boilerplate, repeated Pydantic models that should be shared.
- Call out "utils.py" and "helpers.py" as dumping grounds if they mix unrelated concerns.
3. Industry-standard practices
Python
- PEP 8 (ruff will catch most of this)
- Type hints on all public functions
- Pydantic v2 (not v1
Configclass) - Thin route handlers, business logic in service modules
- Dependency injection (FastAPI
Depends) over module-level globals - Specific exceptions, no bare
except: - Validation at API boundaries only
TypeScript
- Strict mode, no
any - Named exports
- Typed error handling (no untyped throws)
chrome.*in extension code (notbrowser.*)
Comments and docs
- Comments only when the code can't show it (one line where possible)
- Docstrings on public APIs, not on every function
- No stale comments describing old behavior
Naming
- Verbs for functions (
extract_markdown, notmarkdown_extractor) - Nouns for classes
- No abbreviations except widely-known (
html,url,id)
Errors
- Specific exceptions with useful messages
- Validate at system boundaries only
- Don't validate what type hints already guarantee
Tests
- One behavior per test
- Arrange-Act-Assert structure
- No test interdependence
- Parametrize similar cases
4. Layout
- Files >300 lines mixing concerns → flag for split
- Two files clearly belong merged → flag
- New "utils" or "helpers" file with 3+ unrelated functions → flag
Output shape
One line per finding: path:line — problem — suggested fix. Group by severity:
DELETE (dead code, unneeded dependency, over-abstraction):
path:line — problem — what replaces it
MERGE (duplication):
path:line + other:line — same behavior — extract to <where>
REWRITE (best-practice violation):
path:line — problem — fix
NIT (cosmetic, low priority):
path:line — problem
No prose padding. No "great job overall" summary. Just findings.
