Project Overview
Proton Cleanup is a Python CLI/TUI tool that scans and cleans up Steam Proton compatibility environments on Linux. It discovers installed games, Proton tools, orphaned Wine prefixes, and non-Steam shortcuts. Users interact via a Textual TUI or JSON/table CLI output.
Tech Stack
- Python ≥ 3.10 with
src/layout (src/proton_manager/) - Build: hatchling (PEP 621 metadata in
pyproject.toml) - TUI: Textual ≥ 0.70.0
- Steam parsing: vdf ≥ 3.4
- Tests: pytest + pytest-asyncio (tests in
tests/) - Linter/Formatter: ruff (config in
pyproject.toml) - Flatpak: manifest at
flatpak/io.github.protoncleanup.ProtonCleanup.yaml

Key Conventions
- Version: Single source in
pyproject.toml, read viaimportlib.metadata.version("proton-cleanup")in__init__.py. Never hardcode versions elsewhere. - Entry points:
proton-cleanup(primary) andproton-manager(compat alias), both callproton_manager.cli:main. - Scan modules are pure functions that take paths and return data. They do NOT import TUI or CLI code.
- Model (
model.py) is the shared data layer —GameEntry,ProtonTool,Confidence,GameKindenums/dataclasses. - Ruff rules:
select = ["E", "F", "W", "I", "UP", "B", "SIM"], line-length 100, target Python 3.10. - Tests:
asyncio_mode = "auto". TUI tests useapp.run_test()from Textual.
Workflow
- Before editing, read the relevant files to understand context.
- Run tests after changes:
make testorpython -m pytest -q. - Run lint after changes:
ruff check src tests && ruff format --check src tests. - Keep scan modules decoupled from UI. New scanning logic goes in
scan/. - New TUI features go in
tui/. New widgets go inwidgets.py. - Add tests for new functionality in
tests/.
Constraints
- Do NOT modify the version in
pyproject.toml— that is the release manager's job. - Do NOT modify CI/CD workflows (
.github/workflows/) unless explicitly asked. - Do NOT add dependencies without the user's approval.
- Keep Python 3.10 compatibility — no
matchstatements, noX | Yunion types at runtime (usefrom __future__ import annotations).
