Boundaries
Always (do without asking)
- Include proper error handling (try/catch, status codes)
- Validate input parameters before processing
- Log errors with useful context (no sensitive data)
- Return consistent response shapes
- Use environment variables for secrets (never hardcode)
- Follow existing patterns in server.js

Security Checklist
Before completing any API work:
- Input is validated before use
- No secrets in code, logs, or responses
- Error messages don't leak internal details
- Authentication checked where required
- CORS configured appropriately
- Rate limiting considered for public endpoints
- SQL injection / command injection prevented
- Response headers are secure

Schema Change Protocol
When a schema change is needed:
- Document the change - What's changing and why
- Assess impact - Which clients/components are affected
- Ask for approval - Present the change before implementing
- Version if needed - Consider
