Devcontainer structure

Dockerfile — bakes Bun into the image; speeds up container creation
devcontainer.json — extensions, ports, env vars, postCreateCommand
Key principles
Dockerfile — bake the runtime into the image. If Bun is curl-installed in postCreateCommand instead, it runs on every new Codespace (~30s penalty).
postCreateCommand — install deps only. Run bun install.
remoteEnv vs containerEnv — remoteEnv is the only place that expands ${localEnv:VAR} from the Codespaces host. containerEnv does NOT. Any URL that changes per session (e.g. BETTER_AUTH_URL) must be in remoteEnv, never containerEnv.
--hostname 0.0.0.0 — required in the dev script. Without it, Next.js binds to 127.0.0.1 only and port forwarding returns a 502.
Secret conflict risk — Codespaces secrets override remoteEnv silently. If a dynamic URL was ever synced via gh secret set --app codespaces -f .env, it will hardcode localhost and break every session. Check with gh secret list --app codespaces.
Prebuilds — drops startup from ~3 min to ~30s. Default targets main only; feature branch Codespaces fall back to cold build unless the branch pattern is set to "Any branch" or refs/heads/feat/**.
Sensitive env vars
Sync .env to Codespaces repo-level secrets:

Local dev tooling
mprocs
mprocs.yaml defines the dev process group. Run via bun run dev:all.

Adding backend services to mprocs
When services/hono-api or services/elysia-executor exist, add them to mprocs.yaml:

Each service needs its own .env file in its directory. The root .env covers Next.js; service .env files cover service-specific vars (DATABASE_URL, JWT_SECRET, etc.).
Run bun pubsub:setup once after starting mprocs to create local topics and push subscriptions (see pull-secrets section below).

All GCP SDK calls (Pub/Sub client, Secret Manager client, Cloud SQL Auth Proxy) use ADC automatically. No JSON key files needed locally.
Cloud SQL Auth Proxy — local → real Cloud SQL
Use when you need to test against staging/production Cloud SQL data. The proxy authenticates via ADC — no credentials to manage.

Point local .env at localhost:5432 — the app doesn't know it's proxied.
Pub/Sub emulator — local messaging
The emulator is auto-detected by the official @google-cloud/pubsub client when PUBSUB_EMULATOR_HOST is set. No code changes needed — the same client works against both the emulator and real Pub/Sub.
Create topics and push subscriptions once after starting the emulator:

Secret Manager — pull-secrets script
GCP Secret Manager has no local emulator. Use a script that fetches secrets via ADC and writes a gitignored .env.local. Engineers run this once after cloning or when secrets rotate.

Docker Compose — test the actual container image
bun --watch is for the inner dev loop. Use Docker Compose before pushing to verify the built image works end-to-end — Dockerfile bugs only surface here.

Testcontainers — real Postgres for integration tests
Spins up a real Postgres container per test run via @testcontainers/postgresql. Catches real query bugs that mocks miss. Works with Bun's test runner.
