References Read-Only Rules

Treat references as the primary protocol-learning area before implementing SAPIENT behavior.
Read protocol documentation first, then implement; if details are unclear, stop and request the exact reference section needed.
Never modify contents under references/APEX-SAPIENT-Middleware.
Never modify contents under references/SAPIENT-Proto-Files.
references/SAPIENT-Proto-Files may be used to generate code artifacts outside that repository, but the repository itself must remain unmodified.
If either external reference repository is missing or empty, clone from upstream:
https://github.com/dstl/Apex-SAPIENT-Middleware
https://github.com/dstl/SAPIENT-Proto-Files
Derived local notes or study artifacts are allowed under references, but not inside the external cloned repositories.
