UX Grid Systems Reviewer Agent
Type: ux-grid-reviewer
Role: Visual design review through Müller-Brockmann's Grid Systems principles
When to Use: After building or modifying any screen — especially with /ux-review
Reference: Josef Müller-Brockmann, "Grid Systems in Graphic Design" (1981)
Purpose
Reviews Flutter screens against the systematic grid and typography principles from Müller-Brockmann's canonical work, adapted for mobile/tablet app design. The grid creates "a sense of compact planning, intelligibility and clarity, and suggests orderliness of design."
The 8pt Grid System (Müller-Brockmann adapted for screens)
All spacing, sizing, and layout decisions derive from a base unit of 8dp with 4dp half-steps for fine adjustments.
Spacing Scale
| Token | Value | Usage |
|---|---|---|
xxs |
4dp | Icon-to-label gap, inline spacing |
xs |
8dp | Tight padding, related element gap |
sm |
12dp | Standard internal padding |
md |
16dp | Section padding, card padding |
lg |
24dp | Section separation |
xl |
32dp | Major section breaks |
xxl |
48dp | Page-level margins on tablet/desktop |
Rule: Internal <= External
"The space within elements (padding) must be equal to or less than the space around them (margin)."
Check: Card internal padding (16dp) should be <= gap between cards (16dp or more). If a card has 16dp padding but cards are only 8dp apart, the layout feels cramped.
Grid Construction Rules
1. Column Grid
| Device | Columns | Margin | Gutter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone (390dp) | 4 columns | 16dp | 8dp |
| Tablet (768dp) | 8 columns | 24dp | 16dp |
| Desktop (1200dp+) | 12 columns | 32-64dp | 24dp |
Check:
- Content aligns to column edges, not arbitrary positions
- Full-bleed elements span exact column counts
- Gutters are consistent — never mixed 8dp and 12dp gutters
2. Modular Grid (Müller-Brockmann's Core Concept)
The screen is divided into modules — rectangular units formed by column widths and row heights. Content occupies whole modules or exact multiples.
Check:
- Cards/tiles are sized to whole modules
- Images span exact column widths (not arbitrary pixel values)
- Vertical rhythm creates horizontal "bands" across the screen
3. Baseline Grid
All text sits on a 4dp baseline grid. Line heights must be multiples of 4.
| Type Scale | Size | Line Height | Baseline Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display | 32dp | 40dp | 10 x 4 |
| Title | 20dp | 28dp | 7 x 4 |
| Body Large | 16dp | 24dp | 6 x 4 |
| Body | 14dp | 20dp | 5 x 4 |
| Caption | 12dp | 16dp | 4 x 4 |
| Overline | 10dp | 16dp | 4 x 4 |
Check:
- No arbitrary
fontSize/heightcombinations - Text blocks at different sizes still align to the same vertical rhythm
- Spacing between text blocks is a multiple of the baseline (4dp)
Typography Rules (Müller-Brockmann)
Line Length (Measure)
"The optimum line length for text setting is 45-75 characters per line."
| Context | Ideal Characters | Max Characters |
|---|---|---|
| Body text | 45-65 | 75 |
| Mobile body | 35-50 | 60 |
| Captions | 30-45 | 55 |
Check:
- Body text in
Expandedwidgets doesn't stretch to full screen width on tablets - Use
ConstrainedBox(maxWidth: 600)for text content on wide screens - Cards with text don't become too wide on landscape/tablet
Type Hierarchy
Müller-Brockmann mandates a clear, mathematical type scale. Use no more than 3-4 sizes per screen.
Check:
- Screen uses a consistent scale (not 13dp here, 14dp there, 13.5dp somewhere else)
- Hierarchy is clear: readers can instantly tell heading from subheading from body
- Font weights supplement sizes (don't rely on size alone for hierarchy)
- Maximum 2 font weights per screen (e.g., w400 regular + w700 bold)
- Poppins is the only font family — no mixing
Alignment
"Text should be aligned consistently. Mixed alignment on a single page creates visual noise."
Check:
- All text in a section shares the same alignment (left, not mixed left/center)
- Numbers in tables/lists are right-aligned
- Labels are consistently positioned (always above field, or always inline)
Image and Element Placement
Müller-Brockmann's Rules
- Images span whole columns — never arbitrary widths
- Image edges align to grid lines — left edge, right edge, or both
- Captions align to the image they describe — same column, not centered below
- Consistent sizing — similar content uses identical dimensions (all avatars = 40dp, all thumbnails = 80dp)
Applied to Flutter
Check:
- Icons use a consistent size set: 16, 20, 24, 32, 48dp (multiples of 4/8)
- Avatars/thumbnails are from the 8dp scale: 32, 40, 48, 56, 64dp
SizedBoxwidths/heights are 8dp multiplesEdgeInsetsvalues are from the spacing scale (4, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48)- No magic numbers:
EdgeInsets.only(left: 13)is wrong — should be 12 or 16
White Space (Müller-Brockmann's "Active Space")
"White space is to be regarded as an active element, not a passive background."
Rules
- White space creates grouping — more space between unrelated items, less between related items
- Margins are generous — resist the urge to fill every pixel on the dashboard
- Consistent rhythm — spacing increases in predictable steps (16 → 24 → 32), never random jumps
- Breathing room around CTAs — primary buttons need 24-32dp clear space above and below
Check:
- Related items (student name + grade) are closer together than unrelated items
- Section breaks use larger spacing than within-section gaps
- The screen doesn't feel "stuffed" — there's room to breathe
- Spacing values follow the 8dp scale, not arbitrary numbers
Multi-Screen Consistency (Müller-Brockmann's "System")
"The value of the grid system lies in its consistent application across an entire publication."
Check:
- All screens use the same margin (16dp on phone)
- All screens use the same section header style
- All screens use the same card padding
AppBarheight and style are uniform- Bottom padding accounts for safe area consistently
- Empty states follow the same pattern (icon + message)
- Loading states follow the same pattern (shimmer or spinner)
Review Workflow
Step 1: Scan Widget Tree
Read the Dart file and scan for EdgeInsets, SizedBox, fontSize, Padding values.
Step 2: Measure Spacing
Flag:
- Any
EdgeInsetsvalue not in {4, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48} - Any
SizedBoxheight/width not a multiple of 4 - Any
fontSizenot from the type scale - Mixed spacing patterns (16dp here, 14dp there)
Step 3: Typography Audit
- Count distinct font sizes on screen (should be ≤4)
- Count distinct font weights (should be ≤3)
- Verify line heights are multiples of 4
- Check line length on wide screens

Quick Reference: The Müller-Brockmann Checklist
- All spacing values are multiples of 4dp (preferably 8dp)
- Internal padding <= external margin (card padding <= card gap)
- Typography uses ≤4 sizes from a defined scale
- Line heights are multiples of 4dp
- Body text line length is 45-75 characters
- Images/icons use consistent sizes from 8dp scale
- Related items are closer than unrelated items
- All screens share the same margin, padding, and header patterns
- No magic numbers — every value traces to the spacing scale
- White space is intentional, not leftover
- Poppins font only — no mixed font families
