Pocket FM, an Indian audio storytelling platform, has achieved a substantial increase in revenue, doubling its annualized run rate to $500 million over the past year. This growth is largely attributed to the company’s increasing reliance on artificial intelligence for content creation. Currently, 93% of Pocket FM’s catalog is produced using AI, with 99% of new content generated through this method.
The company’s approach centers around building AI tools for the creative process, rather than relying on autonomous content generation. This strategy leverages models trained on years of production data and listener engagement signals, as developed by AI head Vasu Sharma, a former Meta and Tesla scientist. This has enabled a dramatic reduction in content production time – 100 hours of content can now be created in a single day, representing an 80x improvement over previous methods.
This shift has had a tangible impact on the platform’s performance. Pocket FM’s 12-month revenue retention rate has risen to 76%, up from 44% two years prior, reflecting improved listener engagement. Furthermore, the platform boasts over 770,000 audio series and has seen a surge in content production, with creators now generating approximately 2.5 million hours of AI-powered content annually.
Beyond the core audio platform, Pocket FM is exploring new formats with its microdrama app, Pocket Saga, which has a revenue run rate of $15 million. This app utilizes entirely AI-produced content, and is experimenting with integrating content from Pocket FM’s audio series into video formats. The company is currently in discussions with investors regarding a potential capital raise of $100 million to $120 million, aiming for a valuation of approximately $2 billion.
