OpenAI announced Dots at its Dev Day event. Dots are new personal agents built with GPT-6 Astra. They are designed to work independently and pursue user goals with minimal oversight.
Unlike previous tools like Codex or ChatGPT, Dots do not depend on specific hardware or interfaces. Users can start by giving their Dot a name and making it their own. Over time, teams of Dots can work together on tasks.
Dots will be available starting Tuesday for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. Users can launch Dots from existing tools like Codex or ChatGPT. They will also be able to message Dots through organizational platforms such as Slack and Teams. Support for text messaging will come soon.
OpenAI envisions Dots taking on specific responsibilities, called 'specialist Dots.' These can be given identities, credentials, and tools through existing systems. The company is working with Microsoft to integrate Dots into their security controls.
Much of this functionality was possible before, but Dots package it into a new, independent agentic system. The visual design is a bubbly, cartoonish persona, similar to other recent AI avatars. This makes AI feel more relatable.
Developers and organizations can use Dots to automate monitoring, analysis, and other tasks. They can customize Dots for different roles, making AI work more efficiently.
Why it matters
This new system allows AI agents to act more independently, saving time and reducing manual oversight.
What to do
Evaluate if Dots can automate routine tasks in your organization. Consider testing Dots in your existing platforms.
