OpenAI announced new features for ChatGPT plugins during its Dev Day presentation. Developers can now build app-like experiences directly inside ChatGPT using plugin extensions. These extensions will have their own space in the ChatGPT sidebar, making them easier to find and use.
The new tools include interactive panels that let users work with their tools while chatting. These panels can also display files in formats supported by the developer’s app. This makes working with data more seamless.
OpenAI has made it easier for developers to create and submit plugins. A new Plugin Creator tool helps build plugins, and a redesigned process provides clearer feedback during submission. The company also improved how plugins are ranked and recommended in the directory.
Users can now approve each plugin’s access needs individually, increasing control and security. ChatGPT Sites, the lightweight websites built with ChatGPT, can now host these plugins too. This allows sharing apps with colleagues who can use their own data and permissions.
Finally, OpenAI is adding support for the MCP Events specification. This will let plugins start automations based on events in connected apps. Automations are also easier to add and manage.
These updates give developers more ways to create integrated tools and automations within ChatGPT, improving productivity and flexibility.
