Moonshot AI has announced a revenue target of $2 billion annually for its Kimi model, driven by the success of the K3 model released this summer. This represents a significant increase from the company’s reported August revenue run rate. Current OpenRouter data indicates K3 models generate as many as 300 billion tokens each day.
Despite this growth, Moonshot’s projected revenue remains considerably smaller than that of OpenAI and Anthropic, which reported annual revenues of $40 billion and $65 billion respectively. This difference is largely due to the open-weight nature of the Kimi model, resulting in lower margins compared to closed-weight models. The company’s strategy focuses on the potential market for open-weight AI, although it is currently smaller than that of closed-weight models.
Recent allegations have raised concerns about Moonshot AI’s model development practices. Anthropic has accused the company of a model distillation campaign, routing nearly 300,000 requests from Kimi directly to Claude Opus. More than 23 million responses were collected from Anthropic models for use in Moonshot’s training.
There is a deadline of September 18 to book an exhibit table at Disrupt’s Expo Hall, offering opportunities for high-impact leads and investor access. The company’s revenue projections highlight the ongoing interest and potential within the open-weight AI model landscape.
