Kier Group plc began exploring AI in 2026, initially driven by executive interest and a recognition of the technology’s potential to improve productivity and safety. Early experimentation involved ‘prompt-a-thons’ where employees tested Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant against their own knowledge, facilitated through small peer groups. Approximately 40 percent of Kier’s workforce uses Microsoft 365 Copilot, while the remainder utilize Teams Premium, adding advanced AI features. Louisa Finlay, chief operating officer, uses Copilot across Outlook, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint, leveraging it for tasks such as email prioritization and drafting job descriptions.
Beyond individual Copilot usage, Kier is developing AI agents. One agent is focused on analyzing safety data collected from construction sites, aiming to identify potential risk areas and guide human oversight. Another agent is trained on Kier’s safety standards and utilizes drone video to document job sites, equipment, and supplies. This approach reduces the need for personnel to work at height and interact with machinery. The company’s IT department is also developing an agent designed to accelerate response times while maintaining direct human connection when needed.
Data for these agents is securely stored on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform. The company emphasizes a "Human at the Helm" approach, prioritizing human control over AI systems. Training is conducted through small group peer learning sessions, such as prompt-a-thons, rather than traditional webinars. This strategy aims to foster confidence and encourage experimentation.
Kier is also exploring AI applications in its facilities management business, focusing on predicting maintenance needs for complex building components like pumps and elevators to ensure operational continuity. The company’s approach is driven by a desire to empower employees and make use of AI to solve problems.
