Google announced it will shut down the Gems feature in its Gemini AI app. Gems allowed users to build custom AI assistants for specific tasks. Launched in 2024, Gems included tools like a learning coach, a brainstorming helper, and a vacation planner.
Google said Gems will become skills starting on November 17, 2026. The transition will happen automatically, so users do not need to take any action. Gems will remain usable until the switch is complete.
Skills will be used across different AI tasks. To activate a skill, users will need to type a slash ‘/’ in a task thread. This interface is more suited for engineers than regular users.
This change shows Google’s approach to simplifying its AI features. It also highlights the challenge of balancing customization with user-friendliness. Users should prepare for the new way to access AI skills.
