Google introduces RRSI to stop AI agents from memorizing tests

Google researchers released Regularized Recursive Self‑Improvement (RRSI), a harness‑optimization method that limits memorization and cuts token use while keeping performance on unseen tasks.

Key points

RRSI cuts runtime token use by about 30% compared to unregularized self‑improvement.
On unseen benchmarks, RRSI gains up to 4.7 points, while other methods sometimes fall below baseline.
The method uses Claude Opus 4.8 as the frozen model during experiments.
RRSI caps edit budgets, shrinking over time, and employs a critic that rejects task‑specific hard‑coding.

Why it matters: Preventing memorization keeps agents general, lowering compute costs and improving reliability on new tasks.

Self-improving AI agents tend to memorize their test tasks, so their gains shrink or disappear on new ones. RRSI, a new method from Google researchers, reins in this effect and lifts scores on unseen benchmarks by up to 4.7 points while using about 30 percent fewer tokens than an unregularized version.
